I thought I'd share some photos of my new project with you guys. This is a little runabout I bought on eBay last week, mainly to get the trailer that it came on which is the right size for my Glen-L Squirt, I'm going to do a bit of work on this boat over the winter and sell it in the spring, hopefully at a small profit!
It dates from the 50s or possibly 60s, and is typical of the small runabouts for hire up and down the river Thames, originally it had a small inboard engine but has been converted to outboard, the last owners had an electric trolling motor installed. It looks like when it was converted the whole bottom was replaced, as the bottom ply panels are a totally different colour to the rest.
Someone has replaced the foredeck and done a rather poor job, they allowed the sheer to spring in resulting in the pointed shape and unfair lines you can see in the bow shot. I'll replace the deck and reshape this so it'll look much nicer.
Also going is the rather Mickey Mouse windshield, to be replaced with a wooden framed Vee shaped one which would be more typical. Apart from that all it really needs are some new floors and a good coat of paint inside and out, I'm hoping it'll appeal maybe to a young family with a couple of kids, looking for a cheap little boat for cruising the non-tidal upper reaches of the Thames or other rivers.
Of course. I'm in no great hurry to get this one done, as I don't intend to sell it much before April/May next year in time for the summer season. But I'm also building an Iain Oughtred designed 13' Acorn Skiff for myself this winter, so I'll be posting regular updates on that one too.
