I own a mako 171 that is paired with a '00 Johnson 115hp. It has a 13 1/4 x 17 pitch and it produces 5900 rpm at WOT. I use the boat for fishing and waterskiing. I have no problems coming out of the hole when waterskiing. Would a 19 pitch benefit the motor?

Thanks

Dave

Looks to me like you have the combination just right with what you have. 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' is my motto. Many people wish they could get peak rpm at WOT and still have a good hole shot for pulling skiers. If you go to the 19 you will likely drop the peak rpm 200 to 400 and make it bog on the hole shot. You might pick up a few miles per hour but at the loss of the balance you have now.

What is the max RPM that the motor is rated for? If it is 6000 I would stick with what you already have.........Irv964

The motor is rated for 4500 - 5500 rpm. And double checking the propeller It is a 13 1/4" x 15 pitch, older, showing signs of cavitation wear on the edges and a little banged up, but not much. Thanks for the replies.

It's not an exact science but switching to a 17P prop should knock about 400rpm off and that would put at your top rpm of 5500. Not all props are the same so maybe try iboats prop exchange program until you find the one that works best? Good Luck.........Irv964
