Happy Labor Day to everyone! I recently bought a new prop for my boat and i was just wondering what to expect. I have a 195 sea sprite cuddy cabin with a mercruiser 140 alpha 1 I/O. The prop size i had befor was 14 1/2 x 17. I told the guy i wanted to come up on plane a little faster so he told me to go with the 14 1/2 x 19 how do you think its gonna work out im wondering cause i cant take it out yet. Do you think there will be a big difference in rpm or performance? thanx guys!!!

Re: new prop

You will come out of the hole slower and you will theoretically lose about 500 RPM at top speed.

Re: new prop

shoulda posted this over on the prop forum. (already done, mods all over this one, cool) lots of good guys there to help ya out. better than the guy that sold ya the prop that's for sure. yer new 19p prop will give ya better top speed, if ya can get it to plane. yer hole shot will be worse (time to plane). basically ya need to select your prop by what your wot rpm spec is. generally ya loose 200 rpm per 1 inch of pitch increase. or other way around too. ya gain 200 rpm if you lower the pitch 1 inch. ideally ya wanna have your rpm at the top of the spec with your normal load.

for me, when i got my boat. it had a 21p on it. i could achieve 3900 rpm @ wot. my spec is 3900-4300. so i wanted to increase rpm. i put a 19p on it and as expected i now get 4300 rpm. i decreased pitch by 2 inches and got the estimated 400 rpm increase. my hole shot improved. don't know if i lost any speed as i didn't have a gps at the time. but my guess is not much if any. i felt i was overworking the engine with the 21p. overloading your engine is not a good thing and has undesirable results over time..

my estimate for how your boat will perform with the new prop is that it'll get up on plane slower. you may or may not experience a top speed increase depending on how hard the engine is already working. a 4 cyl. in a cuddy is already on the edge gumption wise for most boats that have cuddys that i've seen...

there's also a difference between ss props and aluminum too. if memory serves me, generaly a 100 rpm difference between the two. ss being the slower as it has less flex than a aluminum. but better speed since the ss don't flex too... there's many variables in props too. there's whole books i think written about how and what some of the differences do to performance..
that's about all i know about props. maybe others that have a better idea will chime in too. if i've lead ya astray too. i bet i'll be corrected too..
