New puppy training, etc???

So like I posted before, Spike's 5 mos old, part French bull dog and Sharpei, great to be around and loving his walks! When we're around no behavior issues, goes potty outside, playful yet calm. Sleeps fine downstairs w/ or w/o us, on a favorite old blanket and jacket, not allowed upstairs yet, does fine w/ other dogs and cat getting used to him.
Some other issues are slight sight depth perception issues, just heard him bark as I put him in garage w/ water, old sleeping bag, pillow and toys, w/ radio on low to a news station this a.m. on way to work, feed him before and after I go to work. He has had to go potty in garage and I think when i got home last p.m., he was "scared" kind of shied away- of me for it?? Hopefully the routine will end the potty issues.

You got any puppy pads down for him? I use not to believe in those things but the dog we have is two years old now, stays inside all day while we're at work and 99% of the time doesn't will not pee or poop in the house BUT when she does its always on the pads we keep down for her. We have two doors to the outside in the kitchen area where she's kept, since its a ceramic tile floor, while we're out and there is a pad by both doors.

You'll have to figure out which brand of pad works for your dog cause our dog, Pearl, didnt like the ones from the big box pet stores. She likes the pad from Fred's Dollar Store.....go fiigure that one out.....a female liking the cheaper version of something.

It is troubling for a dog to pee/poop where they think they are not supposed to. So, that is probably the reaction you were getting from the dog. Those 'pads' create a zone where they understand it is OK.

Cats, on the other hand would be happy to let go right on your pillow . . .

Sounds like things are going well with him. Depending on how long you're gone during the day, I would housebreak as normal (no garage potty). A dog generally can hold it 8 hours or even a little longer (maybe 10). If someone is going to be home within 6 hours, I wouldn't try to distinguish it (house vs. garage), and train as normal.

As a note on barking - I have a tendency (when ours start barking at a leaf somewhere wiggling in some wind ) to want to stop them from barking. But at the end of the day, they are the best defense/alert system that I have. Let 'im bark!

Thanks guys - I just want him to do the potty thing in the a.m. when I let him in small backyard and out front after work on walks - dont think he's ready for daytime/work inside house, dont mind doin poop duty in garage, but think Spike would be more comfy outside, not bark too much when we gone, etc

Feed him in evening after work 1 hr before you walk him. not before or during time in garage. Just a bowl of water. And it would be easy to make him a door off the garage to a small fenced area.

OK, I was taking him out right after, and only was feeding him inside house - he had two accidents last pm when we were sleeping downstairs! So told him "bad" while making him sniff it, now trying to feed in garage when I go to work. Can't do side door from garage, it faces/leads to house via inside door.

dog crates are really helpful. should be large enough for him to lay down and turn around by not much bigger. this way they don't really have any extra space so they are motivated not to dirty their area. BUT, only do this if he's capable of holding it for as long as you're gone and you're sure he's taken care of business before being put in the crate. as an owner, you always want to know when he's done his business so there's no guessing. it's your responsibility...don't set him up for failure.
