Been a sib fan lover for the past 14 years, now it's the proper time to change for a rib, mostly for better ride on rough seas and final speed. After one month of buiding to requested detail my new 4.0 meter toy has finally arrived. Will post some pics when all set up is completed.

Happy Ribbing

New Rib has Arrived

Updates :

1-After complete unpacking and final inflation, oh boy, was not a 400 mt as requested, it's a 420. The lenght difference is completely free, aleluya!!

2-Trailer modification, sib lateral bunk beds were cut off, two internal paralell wooden beams have ben added to support 3/4 rib hull. The fixed axle has been modified so that it now moves sideways for proper rib/engine combo balance and less weight on trailer hitch. Complete rib trailer was sanded and repainted with polyurethane auto paint. After time demanding tech work done at our workshop and $ 200 total modification cost, the new trailer is ready to receive it's new boating buddy..

3-Engine, would like to continue using my Tohatsu 18 HP 2 strokes engine used on my previous 380 sib, depending on it's performance, will keep it or say goodbye farewell and unpack a brand new 2T Tohatsu 30 HP, which is the ideal minimum for that size rib.. Friday morning is leaving workshop towards it's all year round home at Green Frog Marina, final set up, engine adjustments & tests will be held on week end.

Happy Boating

New Rib has Arrived

To avoid heavy traffic issues, trailering the combo with a compact car with constant stops and go, with premature wear of brakes and clutch, departed our work shop at 6.00 am and arrived at Green Frog Marina at 6.30, a breeze to tow at that hour.

Took a complete full day to rig the rib to have exactly all the gadgets the old 380 sib had, being the same tube color combination, nobody noticed it was a rib, but parked on it's place, noticed that somehow had grew a bit over the past days :D

Like to keep things simple & handy, available passenger space is a must have, so forgot all about center console and seat, engine controls and cables which can add a extra $ 1,500 to the rib cost, the available internal flat space from bow locker to transom is a nice 3.0 mt, looks like a carrier, has a deck air matt, a isolated bow locker & seat, fill with ice and have a all day cooler, or fill with water for extra bow weight, a new canopy, another must have gadget for summer use.

Was wondering how my old Tohatsu 18 HP would perform on a larger and slight heavier by 40 kilo difference, other issue was that the transom had 45 cm height compared to 38/40 cm for sibs, that meant that was going to need a long shaft engine, but the tubes are 42 diam compared to my 45 diam from my previous 380.

Once on water the flotation line was better than old sib, with warm engine, sitting on top air mat floor went for a full throttle spin and to my surprise the tub planed near instant, no need for hydrofoils, trim is atjusted in second hole out from transom, no side or engine water splash, can hear the engine roaring like a tiger with 200 more rpm than before, the hull is so well computer designed that with same engine got 41.4 km/h compared to 39.5 on a 1 Km ride on flat, no wind water course on the gps. The final speed should better a bit because the canopy was at full display while testing.

Out at open sea, the hull cut is perfect compared to any sib no matter how well tubes and keel are inflated to, does not jump or bounce a bit, passenger confort while cruising is outstanding.

Conclusion : As stated before, after a rib won't like sibs, for new boaters starting from 0 would recommend to go for a rib, no matter what size you choose, the extra investment is well paid for, a better overall ride.

Happy Boating

Hola Sasto,

A Sib is a : Soft Inflatable Boat or Soft Inflatable Bottom
A Rib is a : Rigid Inflatable Boat

Sportfishing Peru is for the big catch in remote areas, usually rod and reel. Be my guest if planning a trip down here in a short future, definitely a must go spin & fishing tour around Palomino, San Lorenzo Island, and of course some nice pisco sours to get warm and in the right mood :D

Re: New Rib has Arrived

Well, after years of sibbing with 280,305,320,340,360,380 mt air mat, wooden, alum pannel sibs, the only possibility left had to be a rib...Used to tow my sibs from my house to a beach boating club, the distance is 30 Km, got bored of doing so, now my trailered rib lives at the club. ten meters from the sea, boat as often as I please, there is a crane facility and with slings a breeze to launch/retrieve from sea specially when you are tired at the end of a estrenuous boating day.

What luxury you got there:p:p you are lucky to have that. Is the boat secured at the club where no one can well take it without permission:eek:

You sure went thru the line of SIBS I tell you. I am starting high up the ladder and will go from that to a RIB as soon as i get my license, been eyeing some already. If I had my license I will move straight to the ribs. I love the red boats, it seems they are the best for the open sea and can be spotted easily compared to those gray, blue or white and blue ones that blend in with the sea and waves:cool:

Re: New Rib has Arrived

To become a member of that boating club was the best boating issue have done in my life, just payed $ 1,300 grand for full membership and rib space and $ 55.00 a month social quote, includes rib, engine flushing services and unlimited crane use, open all year long. No one is allowed to use my combo without verbal permission.

A rib is the way to go, but your case is complicated, too much exams, rules to pass at a foreign country, you should come to boat here.. Red boats looks very atractive, they have an issue, with time and sun color fades if living outside environments, the use of Aerospace 303 protectant and a thick cover is a must.

Light grey is a much better color, color lasts longer and does not heat up as red, not so eyecatching though, if possible don't go for white color, unless there is no other color alternative, is very dusty, needs constant cleaning.

I would love to come down there to go boating. But not profitable at the moment, perhaps one day when i get so fed up of all the BS rules here. I am getting the zodica cadet white and dark blue. I didnt like the gray and I dont think the cadet 340s comes in that color. If yuo can protect the fading by applying that protectant that would be nice. the tropical sun or south pacific sun can really do havoc.

I am also giong to join a boating club, I think the benefits outweigh the cost. Is that 1,300 pesos or what is your currency or is tha US dollars?

Re: New Rib has Arrived

We are a dollarized country hahaha, it's a fraction of the fee menbership that other bigger boating clubs ask around here, you would need to have a cruiser, sailboat yacht to join one of the others. Cadet used to have a white/red version, seems has only the white/blue version available.

Fading and premature fabric issues are more dramatic around the equator specially non protected non hypalon boats, we are located southern, less sun issues. Buy Aerospace 303 at West Marine, Defender, is cheap and for what it protects, is well the investment. Ask Zodiac dealer fo the yellow pressure gauge, is a must have if wanting perfect inflation on all tubes, keel & cruising perfection.

Yes, thanks for reminding me of the pressure gauge, I had a list of things to ask for, but the fellar is still ILL, now for 8 working days geeze.

Re: New Rib has Arrived

We use soles but $ US dollars are widely accepted, the menbership fee payed just once is $ 1,300.00 (thirteen hundred dollars) includes menbership and sib space on top pier as long as you are a menber and $ 55.00 monthly social quote, it's a small rowing and boating club, only 30 available boat spaces, that's a real bargain...

Congrats Sea Rider on a nice looking boat!

I too have been using sibs for a number of years. I have always known the ride would be WAY better in a Rib!

I will put one on the wish list.

New 420 Rib Updates

New 420 Rib Updates

On any inflatable it's very important to have the most available deck space for crew comfort, anchor and gas tank have been moved towards bow. Anchor is hunged & secured at bow's front life line and gas tank is secured by a belt strap tied to both lateral deck hanging rings.

The new rectangular air mat was only 0.85 mtr and needed a 1.00 mt wide, to compensate lateral width play, have added 2 round float foam tubes, kids stuff, left one is used to pass a enlarged internal gas hose from bow tank to exit transom area onto engine, in between, a proper space to place line primer bulb. In this way you get rid of hose gear & people entanglements. Now it's the children & adult magic air mat carpet ride.

Once air mat is inflated to 1.0 psi, both float foams are secured onto lateral tubes, there's a proper aft space to place 2 coolers and water bottles, are secured from jumping by air mat end locking them against transom. The rib has a very deep bow locker, so plenty extra avilable space to keep things well dry & stored.

Happy Boating

New 420 Rib Final Updates

New 420 Rib Final Updates

Was not happy with the rib/engine performance at tight turns, excesive cavitation due to the transom being 46 cm height with a Tohatsu engine that works perfect with min 40 cm heights, so in pursuit of cruising perfection and best speed decided to cut the transom down. After six hours work, $ 50.00 in materials and ten beers...

With a very precise surgical operation, have lowered the transom to 40.5 cm. sealed the open cut with fiberglass, resin and paint, front, rear engine plates edges have been raised to match same transom final height, now much thicker than before. Engine is now integrated into transom's cut matching exactly engine's width, nothing to center, just place and secure clamps.

With transom's new height, rib well trimmed out and perfectly weight balanced; at wot, water flow passes just some mm down under small upper plate, no cavitation at tight turns at all, 18 HP engine pushes rib nicely with more power due to moving more water at prop than before, wanting a rib for long distance boating have added a second gas connector at engine, now have two hoses which suck gas from bow and middle 6 gal tanks, can use both at same time, or alternate simply by opening/closing air tank vents.

Happy Boating
