Many treads mentions that a new and better shift cable is red vs. the old Black one. As far as I can see mine is black - does that guarantee that mine is the old one and needs to be replaced ASAP in order to get the one finger shift performance. Or are some new replacement cables also black?

My understanding also was that the origional lower shift cable was black. All newer ones you find are red. Replacement isn't voodoo magic. Did mine this spring and it shifts great.

All replacement lower shift cables are red.If the cable is black its the original and you are very lucky you still have lower gears in one piece!

i just bought an 86 fourwinns with a 4.3 omc, and it has the black cable. It shifted like crap when i first got it, but i did some adjusting, and now it's not soo bad. How hard is the cable to change out? Where can i get a good shop manual for it that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
