New ski tow?

My ski tow hook didn't do so well the first time I tried to pull 2 people on a tube. I didn't realize it until it bent, but it was only held to the transom with a single bolt and a small washer! Who designs this stuff? I wouldn't trust it to tow 10 lbs., let alone a person.

Anyway, I need to replace it and had a couple questions. I was originally thinking about just drilling another hole and putting a quality stainless steel u-bolt (with a good backing plate) through the transom. However, I saw this ski tow in the online store that looks cool: http://www.iboats.com/Flush-Mount-Ski-Tow/dm/*******.048204069--**********.247007124--view_id.38695 Is it worth $35 and drilling a 2 1/8" hole or should I just go with my u-bolt idea? Also, what sealant should I use to seal whatever I install? My older boat is in great shape and I'd like to keep it that way. Thanks!

Re: New ski tow?

A U bolt will work and so will the iboats one too. I would be sure to install a backing plate made of aluminum or stainless..... at a minimum I would always strengthen that spot.

Most hardware stores have stainless steel fender washers which are also great.

You have two choices for a sealant....... 3m5200 (which is permanent) or 3m4200 which is removable...... do not use silicone.

Thanks! I think I'm just going to use a u-bolt. Definitely going to use a good backing plate. I really don't understand why the original hook only had one bolt and a tiny little washer!

Where can I pick some of that sealant up? Is it something I could find locally?
