Question: On the new 25 and 30 Merc EFIs, I noticed they have optional manual start. Does that mean a battery is not required? If so, how does the EFI work without a battery? Just curious.

THANKS, Bill

Re: New smaller Merc EFIs

Merc web page says that they do not require a battery. I don't know how they do it, but I would bet it has something to do with producing enough energy with the rope to run the EFI just enough to get started.

I am impressed with what they came up with. A 25 HP motor with EFI that weighs about the same as the honda 25. It has very large displacement compared to the others at 747 cc. Honda is about 552 cc, Yamaha is 499, and Suzuki is just under 600. I just bought the Honda, so I read everything I could find on all the 25 4 strokes that were available. I was disappointed with what merc had until this came out. Yamaha is light but only 2 cylinders, Suzuki/johnson 25 needs a serious weight reduction at 212 lbs.

I wonder about the power head. Same displacement as the Yamaha 30 and 40 HP. Merc seems to be a bit ahead with EFI at this point. The 50/60 EFI is very solid motor. If this one live up to the same mark, it will be impressive.
