new starter turns slow

1994 force 40hp starter turns slow. this starter is a new starter as the old one did the same only thing is that the old starter had new brushes in it and the plastic part in it was forgotten and when i hooked it up the solenoide smoked a little got a new started and now it just dont have enough torque sonds as if it is binding i know the starter is good because it did fire up a couple of times also when it does fire up the torque it it is real fast .Can a solenoide be taken apart and fixed or do i have to get a new one?PLEASE HELP.

Have you inspected the battery cables and carefully cleaned all connections?

The first starter probably wasn't broke, either.

also when i took the old starter off i took it to the place i get brushes and they told me 2 of the brushes were burnt so i put new brushes in it and cleaned all terminals

just change the selinoid they are cheep, if you can't find one go to an auto parts place and show them what you have and they should be able to match something up.

Perform a voltage-drop test, beginning at the battery +, with starter switch engaged. (cranking mode). any more than 1/2 volt loss at starter + terminal is unacceptable.
