I just replaced the startor solenoid on my 78 Johnson 85hp
I wired everything back the way it was
now as soon as I switch my battery on the starter images and the motor wants to start without turning the key
any ideas what could be wrong?

Pull the small control wire(s) off the solenoid. See if issue persists. If it does, you have a defective solenoid with a direct short across the power terminals. If giving it a whack with something doesn't correct the issue, the solenoid is no good.

If starter no longer immediately turns on after disconnecting the small wires, check the voltage between the wires. With the key switch off there should be no voltage. When the key switch is turned to the start position battery voltage should be present across the wires. If this does not happen, you have a key switch or wiring issue.

Sure sounds like it. As a final test, you can remove the power cables and put an Ohmeter across the solenoid power terminals. If you are getting 0 Ohms or somewhere close to that, the solenoid is shorted across the power terminals. On a good solenoid in its idle state you should get no continuity (infinite resistance) across these terminals.

Sometimes solenoid contacts will weld together causing a short across the power terminals. As stated earlier, sometimes a good whack can free up the welded contacts.
