Re: new stator
i posted last week on my 1985 175 black max. shutting down after it is under load. i took it to my mechanic and found that the voltage at high idle was real high. it was suggested that i change the stator as well as the control boxes. i had to order the stator but had the boxes. put the boxes on and took to the lake. it seemed to run ok but was getting hot under load. my question is with high voltage at high idle will this cause the engine to get hot? i am guessing that when i change the stator i will have my answer but just fishing for input as well as feeding knowledge to other people. thanks for any advise.
That engine has a rectifier, and no regulator. It only puts out 16 amps, so the battery is expected to hold the voltage down. Unrestrained, It wants to be about 90 volts at speed. The battery in good shape will hold it down under 15.
Save your money, fire the mechanic, and install a new battery. Then keep up on the battery maintainance, especially clean terminals and water.
Your mechanic, if he is a shyster, will put in the stator and then top off the battery, and if that doesn't quite do it, put a little baking soda in the battery, wrecking the battery, but holding the voltage down, thus validating the repair.
If he isn't a shyster, he's just plain incompetant.
Temp is a separate issue. Impeller nearing end of life is most likely.
Sounds like this engine is suffering from lack of preventative maintainance. Just remember, grease is cheaper than parts.
hope it helps
