Ok so i bought a new tilt motar for my 76 formula with an OMC 235hp drive.

my old tilt motor was fried so i pulled out the old motor and the hammer cupling came out with it.

Now i replaced the motor and the tilt motor spins but thats all that is spining the drive seems to have gone down but now nothing. any ideas.

You are very vague in your description. "the drive seems to have gone down ." It either went down or didn't. How could it just 'seem' to have gone down?

What other sounds, sights, smells did you encounter after installing the new motor?

Re: New Tilt Motor

Sorry i was alittle vegue with my discription but when i was hitting the switch i can hear the motor turning but it seems like it is not moving the out drive. what i was saying about the drive going down was when i kept hitting the swich the drive went down but but not how it should i sounded like it just fell so i dont know what is happining. it is like the motor is not engaged. it sounds like it is spinning at a very high rpm. when i pulld the old motor the cupling was rusted to the motor. i soaked it in break clean and then with wd40 is there a certin way the cupling is suposed to go back in or what the manual is not really clear.

The hammer blow coupler turns a half inch or so, cause it allows the motor to spin free for a mini second.

When you had it in your hands was it still good, and you re-installed it?

The clutch might need cleaning.

Did you follow my old post. Clean the clutch. Before you started messing with the motor?

Do you have a manual?

Re: New Tilt Motor

The hammer blow coupler has one slit for the motor and one slit for the shaft.

76' don't have the adjustment allen wrench screw to adjust the tension of the clutch.

All it's doing is the motor is running and nothing is happening?

The clutch is slipping, did you take it apart, it's a motorcycle clutch.

Thats all it is.

If you installed it all right than thats what its got to be.

The coupler will go in either way. It is made up of two identical pieces that intertwine and are held together by a spring. Each piece has two tangs that allow about 3/4 inch of spring loaded free travel before they positively engage. This allows the motor to get moving before doing the heavy lifting.

Each of the two pieces has a hole in the middle for the corresponding motor shaft and clutch pack worm gear drive shaft. Each of these shafts are notched at thier terminus. Both coupler pieces have bars across their hole that the notched shaft end slip over. If either one of those 'cross bars' is missing, guess what will get driven? Nada!

Hearing that you had trouble seperating the coupler from something or other, I question whether one of those cross bars got pulled out and lost?

Re: New Tilt Motor

Mrorak, you got a PM.

Better yet, if all you are missing is the one crossbar, you can probably make one. I am holding a coupler in my hot little hand. I just pulled out one of the crossbars with a pair of needle nose pliers. If you can do that with your existing crossbar, you have a pattern that you could use to make the second one. Just find a piece of steel, the same thickness and scribe the original on it and trim it on a grinding wheel. Budda Bing, a complete coupler.
