If you want it to look like the old mahogany wood boats......... use mahogany but it is very costly!

Ben

The only real similarities between the two are A) They're both wood and B)They're both called "plywood".

AC Ply:
3-5 layers
May have voids
May have waterproof glue
Somewhat flexible
May have knots one side
Medium strength
Costs $

Marine ply:
7 or more layers
No voids
Has Waterproof glue
Very stiff
No knots
Very high strength
Costs $$$

Many people will tell you they won't use anything but marine ply... I personally make my decision based on what was originally in the boat and/or what the designer specifies.

Thanks Eric, I just read a post that someone said use AC or Marine Ply, and had not heard of AC ply before, is there any way of testing ply to see what it is - no visiable stamps left on the piece. i will attach some photos below.

if you are planing on painting , varnishing, use marine ply. wish we could find more old wooden boats like that in the US. AC is fine if encapuslating in fiberglass.

Most marine ply has the word "marine" stamped on it somewhere. Other than that, it's pretty easy to tell once it's been pointed out. Marine ply is usually two side sanded, is cleaner looking and (my opinion) darker colored, and costs three times as much as AC.

If you can post a pic of the sheet in question we can probably tell you (edge on view, please).

there are many finish sides to AC plywood, you can get oak, fir, birch, mahogoney, cherry. and i'm sure there are some austrailian tree finish side. if you want an idea what it will look like with varnish, etc, take a damp rag and wipe the surface. this will bring out the colors and the grain.

Hi Eric, yeah the transom has been replaced some time ago and not painted, you can see it in the top photo and the bottom photo, it has been out in the rain and doesnt look like it is splitting in any way, what do you think could it be marine ply?

I'm thinking it's marine from the pic there, and the number of layers. Maybe someone else with better eyes can tell?
