New to boating and esp these engines.. need help!

So, I picked this motor up for 200 bucks. I have no idea if it runs. I guess my first question would be, was it worth it? Then? Is there a way to retrofit a hydraulic pump for the power tilt? The hoses have been cut. I picked up a 13.5 sea mist with an old Chrysler motor on it, god knows if that one works. I'm hoping I can use the old controller for the merc if it runs. Boat is in bad shape and will be redoing a ton of glass work and redoing/strengthening the transom. Boat say max hp is 55..

The power trim is the last thing to worry about (I believe the hoses are avail. from a Merc dealer).
{I have a dealer's catalog that shows it is around 1979.}
Find the serial Nr. - see if it will turn over [check the compression you can "hot wire" the starter from the solenoid] - remove the lower unit check for water and replace the impeller; judging by the faded cowling it's been sitting outdoors a long time so there might be a critters' nest and rotten wiring, post some pics of the block for analysis.
Even if it was winterized the internals might be rusty and you can't really tell without taking the intake covers off.
The Chrysler controls won't work as the wiring is different.
Way too much weight and power for a 13' boat and there might be a shaft difference long vs. short.

Thanks for the information. On the last comment, my calculations I can get by with the weight, but I'd have to reinforce the hell outta the transom. Is it possible to use the motor as long as its. It full throttle? I did some digging and couldnt find an answer to that. If the boat was rated for 55hp, that means at full throttle. So could you use a 90, at half? Just trying to save some money, but I'm not trying to kill myself. The boat can hold 810pounds, and that motor is damn near 300. I'm guessing it would cause it to set in the water in a different way.?

Sorry, but you can't strengthen the transom.

The motor appears to be a long shaft. What is the transom depth - From the top of the transom where the motor mounts to the keel?

Why can't I? I'm ripping everything out of the boat and replacing all the wood and plan on cutting out the entire rear of the boat and rebuilding it with marine plywood and CSM and 18oz 1708 and tabbing it in with the rest of the repairs that I am doing. While reinforcing everything else. I think the entire height from the top of the transom to the keel was 22 inches. I attached a current pic of the Chevy motor on it now.

1 way too much weight for the boat
2 way to much hp for the boat
3 Actually illegal to put that much motor on that boat in some states. Where are you located?
4 That motor will not save you any money unless it is in perfect running order now.

But, controls, cables, wiring harness, tilt pump and hoses, ignition parts... all will cost a bundle.

That's the issue I'm running into...money lol. It is the sea mist from sea sprite. I dont even know if the Chevy runs. I saw the tower of power and picked it up for 200 with the intention of trying to use it because parts are available. I didnt want to start tearing down the old Chevy because there are no parts... I figured 200 for the merc wasnt a bad deal at all since I could sell it for parts and make back to 200 if I needed to. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to a lot of things and could probably rig up my own hydraulic pump and save 400 bucks, as well as the other crap. But my question has yet to be answered... is it possible? And no, not illegal to put a 200hp on a boat in this state but that's not what I'm going for... so apart from my questions above, now I'm asking why it can't be done? Strengthening the transom, using a 300 pound engine I'd there is only 1 or 2 passengers, etc. You can say no all you want, but I'm not a millennial and want to know the why. I really do appreciate the input and am not blowing anyone off so please do no not interpret it as such. Just trying to get the facts vs opinions and understand. Thanks!

A quick measure and it looks like 34 inches from where this motor would mount to the transom down to the bottom of the prop

Probably not, however who knows until you get into it. what is the compression?

its going to cost you more than $400. if you get a simple oil dyne pump and hoses, you have already spent more than $400

you cant put that 90hp motor on a boat rated for 55 in any state. The USCG follows the federal law. that is the fact look us 33 CFR 183.43 thru 183.53

its over-powered and too heavy for the boat because the boat is too small.

Tear the 90 down and sell all USABLE parts on ebay, the hydraulic cylinders alone are worth money; the factory power trim system has a reverse lock feature for safety it's not just a pump. That small motor is a Chrysler (later Force) from the 60's.

All that corrected me... I said Chevy cause i was tired as heck and the name of the motor means little to me, i am more concerned about the facts and number on why what I'm proposing would or wouldn't work. Yes, i know it's a Chrysler. My apologies.

Scott, private lake. Boat wouldn't be taken on state or
federal waters. How do you know it is to heavy? Overpowered, I agree. But I know that. Is there a formula for determining the wieght distribution for an outboard?

May the force - why would it be an unpredictable ride? If the max weight of the boat is 800, and the motor is 300, plus 2 people 300, and randomness like fuel, etc.. it's still under the limit. No one has answered the why to that one yet. The old motor on it now is 150 pounds, so it would be just like someone sitting at the rear of the boat wouldn't it?

It sounds like we're ganging-up but you're getting advice from experts (not me)

As far as I commented; you can not only consider the different weight of just the motor, you have to factor in the extra weight that of an older boat takes-on like saturated foam/deck-overs.
The boat was built rated 800 lbs. but now that boat is heavier so can carry less.
Will lay deeper in the water & handle different
It not just a Transom to consider but the stringers/hull also.

just my two cents based on experience of strapping a 65 HP on 50 rated boat

All depends on hull type and set up.... Ran a 13ft Ally with short shaft 150 before selling. New owner is on S&F
