New to boating and I have a few questions

I just purchased a used 1985 Glastron Conroy, 16 footer with a 100 HP merc outboard.

After messing with the trailer all morning I decided to clean the boat from tip to tail.

In doing this I noticed I do not have a tag or anything telling me the allowable number of persons/weight/engine size.

Is this required? If so how do I get one?

Every state is different so you need to give a lot more information before anyone can help.

California it is required and also have to have a CO2 warning sticker now.

Here is the Coast Guard formula for Horsepower:

(2 X L X W) -90 = rated horsepower

L=boat length
W=transom width; if the boat does not have a full transom,
the transom width is the broadest beam in the
aftermost quarter length of the boat.

The rated horsepower may be rounded up to the nearest "5".

Here is an example of how the rating formula works in practice, applied to an older Boston Whaler boat, the V-20 model:
Length = 19' 10" Width = 7' 5"
Thus: (19.83 x 7.42 x 2) - 90 = 204.15 Rounding up = 205 maximum rated horsepower
And here is the one for person capacity:
(Length X Width)/15 = # of passenegers

By 1985 boats were required to have a capacity plate. If it is missing, try posting your question in the Glastron form - specify your year and model and someone will be able to give you the specs.

Just for reference, my 1985 16' Bayliner Cuddy Cabin (outboard) lists "5 adults or 750 lbs persons and gear. 90hp max". Should give you a ball park idea. Using the formulas above, Bayliner has rated the boat rather conservatively, so try to get Glastrons actual specs. They built the boat, they know what it can support.
