Hello,

This is my first post on the forums here at iboats, and I am looking to get started in boating. I live in the Buffalo NY area, but I also make frequent trips to the Finger Lakes area so I would like to boat in both Lake Erie, and the finger lakes. I have found a boat that an acquaintance of mine is selling for what I think is a fair price (around $2,000) in the finger lakes area. It is a 1989 Chaparral 178XL bow rider. It is around 17 feet long, it has a Mercruiser 3.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that runs good and nice bimini top. I have driven the boat multiple times and looked it over and it looks like it is in good shape. It is 20 years old, so it will need some minor touchups and fixes, but there is nothing I cannot do myself. I am very interested in purchasing it, but the only thing that is holding me back is a place to store the boat both during the boating season, and during winter. I cannot store it at home. I am doing some research on my own, but I figured I?d ask here too. I have a few questions about what is common for people who own boats and what you do with your boat when you are not using it.

Do most people have a slip that they rent out during the summer months? Can I rent a slip by the month/week/day, or would I have to get one for the whole summer?

If you do not mind me asking, what is a typical rental price for a slip?

Is it common for people to launch their boat every time they want to ride it, and then take the boat out of the water when they are done at the end of the day? I imagine there is some sort of fee for this? I think some state or county parks on lakes have boat launches/marinas. Does anyone know of any such places in the Buffalo area?

Is a 17 foot boat too small of a boat for a large lake like Lake Erie? I do not plan on crossing the lake or anything like that. I would probably stay closer to shore.

Do you keep your boat at home, or rent a place to store it during the winter/summer? If I bought this boat I would have to find a place to store it.

I understand that boats, like every thing else that is fun, cost money and it will add up quickly. But I am just trying to see what options I have.

Thanks for your help,

Matt
