I've always wanted a boat, so my boyfriend bought me one, the problem is he doesn't know anything about boating and I'm clueless. How do I learn about boating, I'm scared to death.... I'm tired of paying somebody to take out in my own boat ????

Well, you've come to the right place.

I suggest you think up a bunch of questions and then use the forum search function to look for answers.
You also may want to just browse the forums and look at the topics, then read the ones that might pertain to information you need.

There is a HUGE amount of useful information here and most of the things you are liable to encounter have been raised by somebody and (hopefully) resolved.

Welcome to the world of boating. Bring your checkbook.

P.S. The Stupid Human Tricks forum is a great place for information if you're the sort who can learn from other peoples mistakes.

Welcome to iboats...you've come to the right place to learn.

First thing you guys should do is take a boating safety class. Learn the boating laws for your state. Your DNR site is a great resource--I was able to go to the Michigan DNR website and find an online version of the Michigan Boater's Handbook-- that's come in very handy, I go back and refer to it often.

Do a search here for any particular questions you have. Your question probably has already been asked unless it's specific to your setup. For example, if you trailer your boat you probably have questions about launching and retrieval. Type "launch how-to" (without quotes) into the search bar and you'll come up with a bunch of info.

If you can't find previous answers to your question by searching, make sure your question is in the proper forum category-- you'll get answers faster.

If you guys didn't do this before you bought the boat, make sure it's water worthy. Search here for info on what to look for and/or have a pro look it over. Sounds like you've had it in the water a few times already, but that doesn't mean there's not a potential problem that will eventually strand you, or worse.

Make sure you have the proper equipment on board, especially safety equipment. Here's a good post on boating accessories to have:

Happy boating!

Do you think your boyfriend would buy me a boat if I could take him away from you? I've been told that I'm a nice looking guy ..........

Yeah, is that your new boat in your avatar? If it is I need to find me a boyfriend like that and I'm married!!!!! Seriouly though ANY question you can come up with can be answered here. If infact that is your boat you have good reason to be intimidated that is a lot of boat, however like anything else if you apply yourself and practice, practice, practice you will become as good a skipper as anyone else. Start with the safety class then go from there. Maybe you could have a paid skipper come along and explain exactly what he is doing on the more technical stuff,( take notes)then you could take over spend some time just doing basic stuff power up onto plane, bring back down. Toss a jacket or noodle into the water(open without a ton of boats around) and practice coming up to it like it were the dock. Spend as much time as possible just being in control of the boat, watching guages, feeling how a boat reacts to different situations, how long it takes to stop, etc. Get your boyfriend involved as well another set of hands are always better than one. Also make yourself checkoff lists, even tape them to the helm where you can see them. That way you won't forget something important and its always there for reference, keep a captians log and jot down things you learn, need to work on, need to ask questions about etc. It may sound weird but if you can write things down when you experience them it helps you remember the order of operation. Good luck and welcome to the best hobby/pastime in the world.

I don't think this is the kind of vessel one would trailer around-Do you not agree. It looks like a 35' Express Sea Ray weighing well over 10,000 lbs...:)

And there boy's and girl's, is what you call a true seaman.....

For the rest of you, that just want to help out a female....and or jump into her good gracious.....nus.....use the other hand or side of brain.

Best thing for her.......is to be smarter at boating than he is.
Now their both beginner's. They don't know anything about boating...BUT, can afford a real special, top dollar, hard to handle boat.

My suggestion would be.....Keep hiring a Captain till you think you know the ropes..And when you think you have it down low (pun in tended), you just might! DO IT AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN.

It's a joy ride.........Only when you can get it right!;)
