My son just got a boat with 1989 85hp Force on it and I would like to change the impeller how do I tell what year and model I have for sure I figure the serial number will have code to tell me. Is there more than 1 model in 1989? Thanks

There are several of models in 1989 but they all have the same impeller.

If it is a 1989 it should have a 1 piece drive shaft gear case.
The OEM part number is 803630T. Aftermarket is MTM-3056 (source Mastertech marine)
If it has a 2 piece drive shaft gear case with a plastic impeller housing with a stainless steel insert cup.
The OEM part number is 47-89984T3, aftermarket MTM89984.

Is there a way to tell 1 piece from 2 piece by the model # 856X9F or do I have to tear it down to know?
I have done this with a 1976 mercury 650 and a 1978 evinrude 75 so not totally new to outboards.

Will correct myself about the information about that all 1989 has the same impeller.
1989 came with both 1 and 2 piece drive shafts LU.

Yes your engine has the two piece drive shaft and the 89984T3 is the impeller, but a preowner could have change it.
But as you mention about the impeller bag it seems it is th two piece drive shaft model.

OEM manual is the best and OB4842 (85, 90 and 125Hp 1988 through 1991 A models) should cover your engine.
Not the L drive model if it that you mean with L models.

Check out at Ebay, they comes up there.

The 89 came with 2 different impellers.
Early in the year they used the older model without the stainless insert in the housing.
853F9D started the new impeller.

Your model came with the newer model.
89984T3 is the part # for your model.

One thing to never do: on the nose of the lower unit, a slotted screw NEVER remove that screw.
The oil drain is on the bottom, probably an allen headed setscrew.
The screw holds the shift linkage in place and will require a dismantle if removed.

I had heard a rumor about the slotted screw just yesterday from a fellow who never turns a wrench on his own boat his mechanic warned him not to touch it.
He didn’t know why. Thanks for the information now I know why.
