It's about as reliable a system as you'll find. Parts are still readily available, and cheap!

As far as longevity, keep oil in it, with regular oil changes.

Winterize it before the first freeze, EVERY WINTER. If you don't you can trash just about everything, including the drive, engine block, and exhaust system.

Do the other routine maintenance (such as replacing the gimbal bellows every few seasons; and a new water pump impeller every 1-2 seasons), and it'll last for many many years.

Nice nick...

If your a bible thumper... i want nothing to do with you.

if your not and your nick is some fluke..... the 350 is about as reliable as it gets. Granted all of the maintenence has and manufactorer service schedules have been adhered to.
It really all depends on how well it's been taken care of.

Re: new to forum question on merc 5.7 sterndrive

your welcome.

the 350 really is a solid as it gets... but like anything else.... it all depends on how it's been taken care off.

and nothing personal with the nick thing..... and i say personal because i dont know you.... personally... i just have this thing against religion.

Word of advice.... if you are looking for unbiased opinions about boat stuff... pick a nick that can't possibly have a bias for or against any kind of religios preference from the start.
It keeps things more neutral that way.

CaptDuane has a nice ring to it. hint hint :D

Or how about you keep your personal opinions to yourself regarding his nickname? He didn't try to push anything on you. You were the one who brought up religion. Religion's not for me either, but that doesn't mean I go looking for excuses to explode on other folks for choosing it.

For someone who's against religion, you seem to have a good deal of sanctimony about it... Hypocrisy is not very becoming.

How's about we talk boats here, and leave religion out of it? ;)

I'd love to keep it out.... seriously!!
however... the user in question using the nick in hand....
brings said nick it into the forums.
and said nick is religous.

and in trying to give people thier own rights to express personal beliefs, without thier beliefs insulting mine in the process (*** for tat)..... i simply asked him to change the nick into something more religion neutral. I don't think there is any harm in that.

Nice nick...

If your a bible thumper... i want nothing to do with you.

Those were the first words you said to a brand new member. Not a very friendly welcome, by any standard.

Again, he never said anything to you (or anybody else for that matter) regarding his religion. Do you go around running people off the road for their "Jesus Saves" bumper stickers as well?

After all, that would offend you, and nobody ought do or say anything that might offend you, right?

But you can blast him and tell him you want nothing to do with him, over a silly screen name?

If his screen name was "Devil's Spawn", or, "Gaiafirst" or "God Sucks", or "Religion is for losers" you wouldn't have said a word to him about it, except perhaps to give him a high-five.

Again, Sanctimony does not become you. There's no reason to turn a boating forum into a religion bashing forum over a totally innocent and non-threatening name.

He didn't bring up religion. You did.

Now, how about them Mercruiser Stern Drives? ;)

God protects the 350 engines! At least he ha done so for mine so far. Maybe for you godless future-hell-dwellers he won't but for the thread starter and me, we're all set.

btw, grow up guys, you'll ruin the board with you're 4th grade arguments. Jason, maybe we don't like YOUR name here.......wasn't Jason one of those movie mass killers? Maybe the hockey mask guy. Are you trying to glorify THAT? And are you a licenced Sea Captain? If not, drop the handle....if so, then stop bragging.

good grief......

...Maybe that's why I'm always having problems with my boat... It's my heathen godlessness!

I knew I was doing something wrong... :D

In answer to the ORIGINAl question: as has been said, the 350, a GM small block, has been around for decades and is a very strong and reliable engine, if properly maintained. As the the disagreements over screen names. Come on, guys, no one's being attacked here. If he's happy with his screen name, fine. If you're not happy with his screen name, also fine. You don't want to give advice to someone because you don't like his screen name, that's your privilege. Why don't we just focus on boats here. We at least all have that in common. Safe, and friendly, boating, All. Hy

As many of you know, religious and political threads are now prohibited. Since this one has turned into a religious debate because of a username, I am closing it.
Duane, I would suggest you reregister and choose a username that is not a problem either religiously or politically on the forums. You only have 4 posts, so it won't be a big deal to re-register with a different username.
We also don't allow controversial political usernames.
