Good day all, joined up the other day hoping to get a little help, and I did, thanx to those who replied.
The help was figuring out how to correct the shifting issue on my Alpha1 gen1. (serial#6683465) 1984....maybe
Shortly after sorting that out and confirming it was good to go I refilled the LU and left the shop.
Went out this morning and there was a puddle of gear lube on the floor. Thinking the little between units o-ring was out of place, I dropped the LU only to see it was were it was supposed to be but the impeller housing was covered will the lube.
Once I completely removed the LU, I noticed the lower drive shaft was wet, and oil dripping from the lower seal in the upper unit.
Now is the space between the two upper seals wet or dry? If dry, I guess I know what I`m doing for-crying-out-loud!!!!
If wet I should be able to remove and replace that lower seal, which by the way was installed the wrong-way-round, wasn`t me I follow directions, I`ll assume the previous owner, as all the gears and everything in there is new. I`ve got a good inkling the upper seal was probably installed wrong-way-round as well.
Let me know what is what, Just hate the thought of removing that upper after spending hours setting the alignment, new boat I built (DeepV16), new engine, rather rebuilt engine install, `84 470.
Looking forward to your replies,
Rick

The space between is dry. Also that lower seal goes in the opposite way you'd expect, lip faces up. It should stop a leak from that upper seal if the drive shaft is installed.

Ya that`s what I figured, Better get at it then or I`ll never get this tub launched.
That`s what I meant by the seal being the wrong way around.
I just couldn`t find info as to whether it was a wet or dry space.
Thanx

Also, DO NOT fit the o-ring to the top of the lower drive shaft. It has a nasty habit of snagging on the seal and holding it open. Merc deleted the o-ring groove for replacement shafts.

If you're leaking oil from that seal, the seal above it is also leaking. You need to remove the gears from the upper housing and replace the seal at the bottom of that housing.

I`ve got it tore down, going to replace all the seals, might as well now that I`m knee deep into it.
Ordered all the parts hopefully be here by end of week or early next week.
Seems the closer I get to launch day..................

Parts arrived this morning, and I got busy, two new driven shaft seals and shaft inspection all good, disassembled drive shaft innards, new seal and O-ring, cleaned and inspected, all good.
Next up I will pressure test the assembled units and hopefully will be good to go.
The task was a lot simpler to do than expected, provided you have the tools, and to say the least a good learning experience.
I`m glad this happened in the shop and not out on the Bay, my paddling skills suck. ;)
