New to I/O have some questions.

As it states I'm new to the I/O world. I have a few questions.

1. Where can I get a service manual And what # manual do I need I saw that they had number options(1998 bay liner Capri with a 4.3 mercruiser 190hp)

2. How often do I need to change to oil? And where can I find a suction pump for doing this other than the overpriced dealer?

3. What octane has should I run for best reaults? Regular mid or high

4. How often should I do tune ups such as spark plugs wires etc?

5. Any other operating advice or maintenance would be greatly appreciated.

Might want to start up in the stickies (first posts in this forum) about all of your questions are answered in there.

Items 5 and 6 cover most of the scheduled items.

You should also post your engines serial number, it may or may not be a 98. Common on boats.

My motor wouldn't be equipped with points would it? Meaning I would not have to worry about setting the dwell etc? It would just be plugs wires cap and rotor? I just want to go in and do everything now so I can keep up with the intervals myself. Where would be a good place to look for the oil suction pump. Also, what oil would be good to run?

No 4.3s ever ran points. At 1998 you should have Thunderbolt V ignition system... Post up the serial number of your engine and we can look up the year and point you at some manuals....

Any suction pump designed to pull oil up through the dipstick tube is good enough for what you're after... Try fleabay....or your local car parts shops...

As for the oil to use... That subject has been flogged like a dead horse... Once you get the manuals and have a read of the specs for the oil, based on your ambient temperature, go out and buy your favourite oil... I'll start the debate by saying I run a diesel grade oil in my engine... (and let the floodgates open :facepalm:).... But the best oil for the drive is the Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube.... It's the ONLY one recommended for the Gen II legs....

Thanks guys, yeah sorry about the impatience thing I'm bad about that I'll stop doing that. Where can the serial number be found so I can locate it And post it to decipher what manual I'd need. Also, I read somewhere that the outdrive has a reservoir for oil as well located in the engine compartment? Or did I misread? Does that drain when the lower unit is drained or does it have to be sucked out And refilled separately from the lower unit? I know the lower unit drain and refill process but didn't know if the Resevoir changes the drain/refill process or I'd you service them separately like you would on a radiator and a overflow jug being it is only used if the unit runs low and sucks fluid down?

Engine serial number is on a metal tag on the flywheel housing casting, just above the stater motor... IF you have a oil monitor, then drain it with the rest of the drive and fill it according to the instruction in the manual, when we work out which one that is...
Leg serial number should be on the port side of the drive shaft housing (upper box)....
