Hi, I just picked up a Grew 155 with a 1974 Johnson 135hp outboard on it. Its in rough shape but will be a fun project. I'm just looking for any information on this boat as my google searches come up empty for anything on this boat. I've attached some pictures with the info on the boat as well as pictures of the boat. I'm trying to find out mainly the year of it as well as anything else related to this specific boat

Thanks.

If there is foam floatation under the floor it may be water logged.----And stringers and transom may be rotten.----A complete evaluation needs to be done on boat and motor before spending any beer tokens.

Oh yeah its pretty rough but i got it for free. So im not losing much the motor alone is worth a decent from what ive seen. Definitely going to be be a complete resto project. But im thinking the fiberglass hull should be ok all the wood is completely gone but thats minor.

Oh, I'm sure that will happen but worst case if it all goes to hell I'll sell the motor and scrap the trailer and boat. Can you tell me which of the numbers i posted is the HIN? Because the one thats stamped into the boat keeps coming up as invalid, something about a letter where its not supposed to be yet i know I've typed it as is on the picture

I redone a 1978 Grew 196 (I think) a number of years ago. It was actually a pretty well made boat. The floor and transom needed to be replaced as well as the foam. The two main stringers running down the length of the boat were soaked but surprisingly not rotten. Looked like they were mahogany or some other tropical wood that won't rot.

Thats good to hear! I'm excited to get working on it. Should be a pretty fun project, I'm trying to turn it into a good all around boat. Something that will rip down the lake and still be alright for fishing. Being that it is a tri hull boat we're planning to build a bit of a fishing platform for the bow. There is no interior in it currently so we have a blank canvas to do whatever with that.

Something is amiss, the HIN you posted is invalid
ZGR155M7715B

And so is
ZGR155M77153

Incase it's a 3 at the end not a B.

What does paperwork say the HIN is?

USA based?

I don't have the paperwork at the moment, the previous owner is a guy my buddy knows so he told us to take the boat now to get it off the property and he would get the paperwork figured out as he didnt have the ownership when we picked it up. But no I'm in Canada. This has been my issue though because i keep trying different sites to run the HIN and its always showing invalid

Is it even necessary to register a boat in Canada? Mine is not and I don't know anybody around here in NL that does. Whats the purpose of it, besides paying a fee?

Yeah, atleast in ontario anything with 10hp or more has to be registered, but I don't believe insurance is necessary. But this is my first time owning a boat so I'm new to the whole thing so I could easily be wrong.

The fact that is was free makes it scary !! The rule if thumb is " the most expensive boat you will ever own is the one you get for free".... It has been very true for most. Good luck...
