Hey guys, picked up what I hope is a great find. from what i gather, theres lots around but i think this ones a bit different. Model 35022- 1961 40HP evinrude. the thing is, from what i'm told, its got less than 15 hours on it. It starts and runs ok in the bucket, havent had a chance to get out yet. I'm wondering if theres anything specific i should be doing, with the fuel specifically. this was designed for leaded gas was it not? should that concern me? Also, should i be ordering parts now just because or should i wait for a problem to arise. ie- fuel pump, impeller, etc. Love to hear your thoughts. thanks

Change everything that is made from rubber or has rubber in it. Carbs, fuel pump, impeller, fuel lines, etc. No worry about the leaded gas.
Here is a good post for you.

You can run regular gas, I would replace the impeller if you don't when it was done last.
I don't think you need to worry about stocking up on parts, they are available.
I would run a spark and compression test to get a baseline on the engine.
You might find that when you get it on the water you might have to overhaul the carb since it has been sitting for a long period of time.

Re: New to me motor

thanks for the advice- it is pumping water, but i agree that an impeller would be cheap insurance. I guess i need to get it out there and see how it is before doing anything further. It was running rough when i 1st got it going but i adjusted the carb and it seems to idle fine. Starter might have some issues although it might just be bad cabling- it engages and sometimes starts it but seems like it has trouble turning the flywheel. sometimes it doesnt. thanks again
