Facts for you.-----If you do not know the condition of the impeller then install a new one.-------Water will spit out of the 2 exhaust relief holes at idle.-----------Test the overheat horn in the control box.

The common telltale did not make it's debut on the OMC outboards till the 78 model year. Your engine may only put out a light mist from the two exhaust relief holes after it warms up. Start your engine when cold. Hold the palm of your hand back by the two midsection exhaust relief holes. After about a minute, the thermostat will open. When it opens, water droplets will start to form on the palm of our hand when at idle. That's normal, and a good sign.

I know with earlier 40hp models, the thermostat would only allow water through at a certain temperature. To make life easier to test your impeller, take out your thermostat and water should come out if the relief holes. Also it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat as well.
