new to outboards

i have a mercury 850 with thunderbolt ign. serial #3869889.i want to see if i can get it to run.how do i keep water flowing through the pump as i run it?

The best bet is a set of these muffs here's a picture they can be bought most any place that has marine parts NAPA to Walmart.

Or some folks use a barrel there kind of a pain to use.
