Re: New to site

an old merc on an old boat looks good--but you are in the restoration hobby stage--think about a vintage sports car. Stuff will go wrong, nad require tinkering--time money and skills. if you want something dependable "starts first time every time" then you need to plunk down the green for a newer motor.

Mercs can be very tempermental and it's hard to find skilled mechanics who know the old ones. They were in some areas internally inconsistent from year to year as Kiekhoffer tweaked them. They were fast and popular with the speed guys, not the work horse guys. "If you want to get there, get a merc; if you want to get home, get a johnson."

Lots of boats from the late sixties on were called "tri-hulls" and cathedral hulls. Actually, very few true tri-hulls were made; they weren't too successful because the angles, etc. were severe. All three "hulls" where they hit the water were about the same size. The cathedral is a softened tri-hull, with the center "hull" deeper. So the classic Whaler is pretty close to cathedral and some people nowadays refer to them as tri-hull, and they are comparable until you get real technical.

If you want to get there, use a Mercury. If you want to get back use a Johnson---OR get a Sears and rowback.

Trihull, cathedral--AKA "waveslappers"

View attachment 182310 Does it look something like this?

Yes it does, Got motor on stand needs some help took cover off choke rod broken, deep gouge in lower end, carbs missing screws, Not a good sign, power cable in need of replacing, turns free and paint is good I guess they are the only things good so far. I guess it's going to scrap!

Re: New to site

the worst you can do is get a price for all the parts

Well it took some time going over this thing the words kept coming up (Discontinued part) time to price out motors
Ouch this is going to sink things.

Unfortunately Mercury parts support doesn't seem to be as good as Johnson/Evinrudes going back. You can still get just about every nut bolt and screw for '78 and newer J/E's, and darn near every one for '73 and newer.

Re: New to site

Welcome !!! It's always more expensive to restore old stuff than fix new stuff. It just depends on what your goal and use for the boat is.

... or just re-power. Some of those 2cly Evinrude 50's come pretty cheap. I used to run one on a 15' and 6 gallons of gas would get you a LOT of time out on the lake.

Thanks for the information. I guess I will take my other questions to the Eng topics.
