I would like to get some advice from you guys. I have been reading the resto
threads, and have thought about getting one myself. I have found one that is reasonably priced. Just needs to be completly gutted and redone. Don't know the model or year, but has a large cutty cabin, and a aluminum control box with old spoked wheel. Was set up for a outboard. Was thinking of cutting the cabin off and moving the windshield forward to make a fishing boat like the North River sled i used to have. The boat is 21' so it should workout well. My wife thinks I'm nuts. But should be able to get it done by Jan. And start catching winter steelhead. Any thoughts? The boat will be set up with 2 chairs at the front and two sideways bench seats at the sides just behind the front seats.

Here is what I hope to end with

Whoops. Wrong image. Anyway, has anyone welded their boat hull to eliminate the rivets?
I already have a new dash mocked up and will probably use the bow cover with some modifications ( anchor box , self bailing front etc)

Let's see if this works

That is what I get for 450

Yah, that would be some major mods to that rig but I think it's all doable man!

You thinking outboard bracket too?

Its all doable there West Coast, just getting the funds is all that it is going to require. That and the time you spend doing it. Where at in Oregon are you located at?

Yes I was. I think it will be cheaper in the long run than putting in a 4.3 FI. I know I can't shoehorn a V8 into it. The modifications for a I/O unit would be more labor intensive, but doable. I think I will just put on the extended transom. The hull will actually go all the way to the back of the "bracket". It is suppose to give a longer profile in the water to the boat, makes it easier for the boat to get up on plane. At least that is he theory at least. It works well on my brothers 22' Hewscraft.

West side, around the Portland area. 20 minutes from Mt. Hood and 55 minutes from the coast.

The only problem I will have is rain come October. It did snow here fir about 3 days last year.

Cool hull. The idea of modeling your rebuild after a new boat that you like is a good one. I got lots of good ideas for mine from looking at new ones.

I'd drop your welding idea. From what I understand the aluminum is very thin and too easy to burn through. Crack repair is hard enough let alone trying to weld up the whole hull. Plus there'd be no point. If you rebuck any leaky rivets and coat all your rivets and seams from the inside with Gluvit, you'll have a leak free hull for years to come.

Good to know about the welding. I guess I'll just fire up the mig and tig welders for the new brackets and rails and such. I think that the transom will need some major supports to be able to hang a 115 or 150 with a kikker 2 feet of the back. I still have my Lorance GPS fish finder with auto steer for it, so when I'm out past the mouth of the Columbia river I can still get to my favorite fishing spot.

Wow, just read my earlier posts and have got to turn off my autofill on my phone!
Sorry about the misspelling. I was wondering about welding the ribs to strengthen the whole hull. We get 3 to 6 foot swells on the river when the wind blows and then barge traffic with their wakes too. I have seen boats with short gunwales and lessor built boats "tweak" and then never be right again. ( getting caught between a swell and a barge wake can ruin your day and swamp your boat ) not to mention the cargo ships that come and go at about 4 or 5 a day.

Bannaboater, I really like your little red and white one. Is that a 16 footer?
It reminds me of the Chris Craft I used to have.

Welcome abord WC, I really like your plans for that rig. The photo you posted of the new boat looks awesome, I like all the rails and set back bracket.

Good luck to ya!:)

That seems like an awesome project... If I had the means, money, and know how it'd be fun! It'd be a total one off custom! Good luck to ya! I look forward to the thread when it gets underway! and if it goes down WELCOME TO THE DRY DOCK!

EDIT: Subscription added... now ya have to go through with it... dont need a dead thread in the subscription folder... that'd be a disappointment :D

Well we are almost neighbors sort of....:D My sis and mom live in Oregon City and another sis in White Salmon, nieces in Hood River and nephew in Astoria. The only thing I don't like about this area is all the rain but that is ok, I will live. You a good project ahead of you bud but I am sure that you will get it done as it sounds like you know how to work with metal fairly well.

Re: New to Starcrafts

Thanks for all the encouragement, I will start a new thread when I start the build, inwas just told by the "commander" ie: my wife that I MUST sell some of my other toys before I can start this project. Anybody into British sports cars, or choppers?

KellyC, I do know how to weld and fab, kinda had to learn, I build hot rods, choppers, and restore VW's, and British sport cars as a hobby. You would not believe the rust on those cars! I also own a trucking co. And do all of my own maint. and repairs.

The good part is after some other "projects" are sold I can get that boat in the shop. Might have to turn it sideways, the shop is only 24' deep but 36' wide.

Well I'm off to the steel yard to buy some stock. Gotta redo the batt tray in the spitfire so it doesn't fall on the passengers feet going down the road.

That yellow cuddy rig is a Starchief or Chieftain, depending on the year I believe.

We have a brochures thread here on iboats too, link in my signature.

I think it's a great deal at $450, tons of potential:D

Just make sure it has no bad dents or cracks and it should be a good project.
