Nice Forum, now time to help a newbie. Just got a 16 foot 1965 Clippercraft with a 85 Chrysler OB. I think the motor is a 1978 or 1979 (model 857HD Serial 1951)Any way to know year for sure? The lower unit has two small open holes on the right side of the motor - I am wondering what they are, and if they should have bolts. One is very small (1/8 inch diameter)-no threads just below the drain plug, seemed like a small amount of water was in it. The other one was lower and has threads in the hole, and had a small amount of gear oil coming out of it (again rather small - 1/8 inch diameter). Any idea what these holes are for and if they need to be plugged? The prop is in need of repair, and I need a spare. Is there any way to determine the pitch of the existing one? How do you pick the correct pich - trial and error, any recommendations? What gear weight gear oil should I use anyone use synthetics?? What repair manual should I get and where? Thanks for any input you can provide

Your Chrysler outboard is early 70's.
The first hole you mentioned is to be left open. It will help to drain water from the powerhead. and the top of the case.

The other hole is to house the shifter pin.<-You will need this.

There should be a number on the prop. IF you have a look, I can find it for you once you report it to me.

Use only 80/90 EP gearoil. Normal gearoil is not recommended.

As for the manual, you can purchase one here.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...id=003171303&current_category=chrysler manual

TMD

Thanks for the reply TMD. Is there a part in the shifter pin hole that could have been lost? Or could something have been damaged by letting water enter this hole? What size length and thread bolt goes in the hole, and should there be any sealant on the threads?

If it is the shifter pin that is missing, you will probebly need to disassemble the gearcase to replace it as it has to line up with the shifter actuator.

Yes..it is a special part.

TMD
