hello all,

i've been poking around on here before and decieded to take the plung. i gained a 14ft fiberglass boat. it is pretty much the same shape as a jon boat. the owner before me pulled the deck off because of rot. besides the price, a blank hull and the idea of rebuilding to be my own caused me to jump on this boat as soon as i saw it. anyways, im sure i will be asking plenty of questions later on, my main question is...the title says the boat is a hurst, no pun intended, there is no max weight or max hp tag on this boat. it is exactly 14' and is 52" wide. can anyone suggest what the max hp would be on this boat. only reason is i came across a 30hp mariner shortshaft and was wondering if this would be too big. any advice would be great. thanks.

Hmmm... we need a bit more info. Can you locate a hull number anywhere on the boat? Like on the right (starboard) side of the transom near the top? Any idea on how old it is?

Gut feeling says a 30 on a 14 foot boat may be perfect, or may be too big, but the only way to know is to look up what the mfgr recommends.

Edit: Actually that's not true. The USCG formula for calculating the HP by boat size (2 x L x W) -90 comes up with about 22-23 hp for that size boat... so 35 is actually overpowering it, but it's not an insane amount. Better minds than mine will have to chime in on how sane it is though.

hi flaxterra welcome to i boats.

congratulations on the new to u boat......

the first thing you want to do......is go to the local marine store.....take all the money out of your wallet....open the door and just throw it at them.......

then go home and put a for sale sign on your boat.... :D :D

just kidding.......

the uscg has hp ratings for your craft...it depends on the legnth and the beam.....you can find the calculations here....

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=191283

second.....your in the right spot for re fitting your boat.....when its all done...it will be yours...the way you want it....and all paid for :)

the guys here are great....and can answer any question you might have.

btw......you also need to measure the legnth of the transom to find out if that short shaft will work

`16 inch transom short shaft 20-21 inch transom long shaft. post a picture of your boat. i've had 2 boats that size one was rated for a 50hp on is rated for a 60 hp.

this is an aluminum boat but will give you ideas. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=233970

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format

Also there is a good chance its older than 1972. They didnt start putting Hull Identification Numbers on the hulls until 1972. If its earlier than 72, there will be no HIN, and no posted max hp rating. If the boat is shallow, with low sides. I think 30 may be a bit much. But if it has fairly tall sides, better than a foot, 30 just may be great. Chances are that the 30 is going to work fine. Hull is probably a bit heavier than an aluminum 14 footer, so itll take a bit more power to get her planed out. Most 14 ft aluminum boats only take around a 10 or 15...

Re: new to the forum, questions on rebuild

Thanks everyone for you great response!!! my boat is a 1974 hurst ???? something. i cant seem to find any info on this boat but i do know it was built in orlando fl. the boat is a true 14' and the transom is 52" wide. the sides are a about 15" top to bottom. i looked into this 30 mariner and i guess it came off a boat with stick steering. my plans are calling for a tiller steer. im not sure if you can convert. im kinda thinking a 25hp might suit my needs a little better. this boat doesnt have to screem through the water but i would like to pop up on plan good cause i will probaly do shallow water fishing from it.
a quick questoin about the deck. this boat has ribs running down it like a aluminum jon boat. the boat came without a deck, in the front of the hull about where the bow begins to flatten out there are probaly 1 x 1 thin peices of would running down these ribs on the inside. assuming these are the stingers, shouldnt they run the lenght of the boat?? they stop about 20" from the front. im also assuming the deck sat directly on the bottom, these 1 x 1's wouldnt really hold the deck up off the bottom. so kinda confused on where to start with the deck. does it have to run the length of the boat, the deck i mean. i was planning on a raised, large casting deck front and back. also, being this boat is small and weight for me is an issue, does the deck have to be 3/4" ply. i know this is a lot of questions, but any insight would be great, thanks again for your help

her she is

as you can see i have some work on my hands. i cant tell if the deck was on the bottom of the boat. it looks like it has small stringers in the bow section. is it possible to add higher stringers to raise the deck a couple of inches. it would be great to add foam. a kind of flats skiff is what i want to achieve, with front a rear casting decks. anyways, any suggestions would be great.

Well, it's a flat bottom john style boat. Fiberglass type. Most of those are made from aluminum.

Shallow runner (draft) and your engine choice should be a short shaft. You have a 15" transom.

Looks like a salvageable hull. The front deck is cool.

Press on! I'd love something like that for river and shallow lake fishing. You can get in all kinds of nooks and crannies where the big one's sleep! It almost reminds me of an air boat hull.... something you'd see bombing around in the everglades.

no.....1/2 inch ext grade ply is just fine....glass it into the boat....hit search to find out how.......the glass will add stiffness as well as protect it from rot

ext grade ply wood, is that the same as whats at home depot or lowes?? or is it marine grade?? i was thinking about raising the deck, putting in stringers so that i can put foam under the deck. hoping this would help with running shallow, or shallower. this may be off the normal restoration question but i do plan on raised casting decks in front and rear. do i have to use 1/2 ply or if supported well can i get away with something thinner?? great advice guys, im almost ready to start. any advice on this would be great...again.

Adding foam won't change the boat's draft. Its purpose it to keep the boat from sinking if it gets swamped. The higher your deck is the more "tippy" the boat will become. If the boat is extremely stable now, chances are raising the deck will be ok. If you want to make sure, you can set up a little test with some plywood. Just make yourself a little makeshift deck and launch the boat. It's a good way to tell what your raised deck will feel like before you commit. Another way is to find someone with the same boat who has raised the deck and see what they have to say about it.

If you do build the deck, use materials as light weight as you can. You might even go as far as estimating the weight of these materials and put that much weight in the boat and see how it affects her.

Excellent river fishing boat by the way. Good luck with your project and welcome to the forum.
