New to the Forums! 9.9 Question!

Hello ladies and gents,

I'm a new boater, my buddy and are i fixing up our first boat in preparation of getting into a nice fishing/leisure boat in the near future.

I recently purchased a 1974 Gypsy Regal with a 65hp Johnson Outboard and a 9.9 Evinrude outboard. The Johnson is a project but the 9.9 was supposed to have us out and fishing...not the case.

Here is the problem, the engine starts fine but after about10 minutes of use it will die. It's getting good gas and i'm fairly sure the idle is set properly. What i think it could be from my extremely limited knowledge of these motors is the Impeller not passing water and in turn overheating my engine.

This is a big time set back for me and my buddy and we are looking for any possible answers. If you guys could point me to a good maintenance manual or walk me through some options it would be extremely useful.

Thanks guys and i appreciate any and all input!

Dub.

welcome, model# or year of your 9.9. have you check spark, when it dies? will it just restart immediately, or do you have to wait for it to restart, how long? can you hold you fingers on the block for the count of 4 when it quits.

Re: New to the Forums! 9.9 Question!

Ok, here is what i came up with.

The model number is: 10855M It is a 1979 Evinrude 9.9

The motor shuts down after around 10 minutes and i need to wait seemingly for it to cool down to start again, upwards of 5 or so minutes. Now i can hold my hand to it but it does feel warm, and i also didn't see any water moving from the exhaust of the boat...

looking from the back right rear side of the motor pan is an outlet, this is the tale tell it should have water coming out of it. could be clogged. remove hose and clean hose and outlet. did you check for spark or both cylinders, when you have to wait for it to restart?

I'm afraid im not so sure how to go about doing that, could you explain?

I think i need to invest into the manual for the motor here shortly. I recently backed the boat into the garage and im starting to dig deeper into this.

Can you post pictures on this forum?

You certainly can. Look here for a diagram and part numbers for your entire engine. You will see the hose TD is speaking about. I have the same motor as you and it is a good one. You should be able to get a manual of Ebay or here at Iboats. Get and original OMC service manual either Johnson or Evinrude. Don't buy an CD manual or you will wish you didn't. Best of luck. Rick.
