I do not mean to sound stupid, but here goes. I just purchased a 2000 Aquatron 180 ski boat with a 4 cyl. Mercruiser. I work on outboards but have never worked on Mercruise engines. How do you know if it is a closed water system or a fresh water pickup. How do you know if it is picking up water like it is suppose to. Are the any valves that have to be open for it to pick up water. The boat cranks and runs good. Have not put it in the water yet. Was running last season. Not sure if it was winterised or not. The lady i bought it from husband passaway last year and she does not know much about it. I bought it to fix up and sell. how do you open this engine for summer use. Yes I used the muffs.

2000 180 AQUATRON BOWRIDER
ENGINE(S): 3.0 135 HP MERCRUISER

Re: New to the Mercruiser

Even closed cooled boats pick up sea water. There is a heat exchanger (radiator) and sea water moves through this to cool the antifreeze water. So in answer on how to tell, there will be a heat exchanger and somewhere to service the fluid, like on a car. From there, there are full closed and partial closed.

The water pickup is located on the lower unit, and I hope you ran it on the muffs. If not, time to change the imperller.

Here is a great link to summerization: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=192804
