Re: new to this stuff

Most likely it's the Gel coat that's cracking and is generally not good. There's a reason the boat was free. Nothing to feel bad about though, new to boating means new to the problems that come with it. Free isn't a bad starting price, but it may cost you to get rid of "free" unless you can find a way to salvage it.

Post up some pictures of the cracks and I'm sure the other fellas here will pop over and give you an opinion. That little paperclip at the edge of a topic is sure to draw people into a thread....everyone loves pics! :D

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format.

Interlux has some good paints for both above and below the water line.

I have heard (though not yet tried) that rolling and tipping it is pretty easy and gives great results.

I don t think just paint is gonna fix this, Sawmill,
Looks like your gonna have to sand all that down, make sure you get all the loose stuff off and gel coat it.
Unless someone else has a better idea, it is gonna be a project.

Dang, I thought mine was in bad shape. Yea I hate to say, but you're going to need to sand that paint down.

I really hope the veterans/pros chime in here because a lot of us restoring old boats have gelcoat that looks similar to that. Ondarvr?

That's some of the worst gel coat I've seen, looks like it was applied too thick, plus under or over catalyzed, resulting in a poor cure and lots of cracking. This is one of the few times you need to remove all of the gel coat, at least in these areas before you try to repaint it. Get a larger grinder with a soft pad and 36 or so grit paper and go for it, try not create gouges and low spots, or they'll need to be filled later.

this guy ^^^^^^^^^^ knows what he is talking about......

grind out the affected area, youll need a cuple a layers of glass in there, and fill with a poly fill, if the fill is more than 1/8th of an inch re wrap with glass, and re fill to smooth.....

rvr?
that looks brittle.....over cat? / improperly mixed?....im guessing here
