I don't how many of you all have ever used a tool belt, the type for framing/building. I recently had to replace mine, and it was weird. I mean, I felt like a total neophyte. It was like, "oh great, now I have to prove that I know what I'm doing all over again." So I kicked it around he yard for a while, but it still looked new. Dang! To make things worse, I have two new tape measures, a Fat Max and one with 8th inch increments on it. That don't look good. Dang!! And my 28oz estwing has my buddies blood all over it, that don't look good neither. Dang!!! How do I walk onto any job site and not look like a total newbie dumbazz?!?!

Anybody else ever face this dilemma?? I just figure the next time I am doing some construction I'll walk in there like the own the whole place, and dazzle everyone with my BS.

I love my new belt though. I carry a sweet little cats claw, a 28oz waffle head Eastwing, an 18oz finish hammer, three nail sets, two carpenters pencils, a drywall saw, a killer little razor knife ( I can change blades without taking it all apart), a combination square, my Fat Max tape (I can run out 18 feet before it falls! Awesome!!) with pouches for nails, screws, whatever. All it needs to perfect is a set of braces (suspenders).

Looks like you answered your own question bud! :D
Actually there is something you could do.
I made a custom knife sheaf 10 years. Holds extra blades etc. Anyway I wanted to use oil tanned leather to protect the blades when I was out in the rain but was at home and not the shop.
So I took the leather and put it in a pan and dumped a bottle of 2 cycle in it. The next day I took it out and let it dry.
BTW you can buy the proper oil to do this. Anyway it darkened up and to this day sheds water and doesn't stain jeans or rub off.

But a better way! Bet your sorry you asked now :)

Wipe that bright / new looking belt down with acetone then buy some light colored leather dye,
tan would work, and wipe your belt down with it letting different places get more dye than others.
Wipe down with acetone again then rub in a good leather baulm. (sp)
Done deal No-one will ever know its a new belt

Now lets deal with them new tape measures...can't be looking like a newbie...

This weekend go to your local pet store and ask them if you can place them in with the kittens..pick them back up on Sunday and no one will suspect that they arnt 5 years old!!

Any other things I can help with??

:D :D

About the hammer with your buddy's blood all over it, that's not as amateurish as it would look with your OWN blood all over it!

:p

Re: New tool belt

The only things I carry on my belt are my DVR camera (little thing about 1"x2" in a canvas pouch), and my cell phone. If I had to wear the rest of my tools, I'd need a Korea-era rucksack.
I used to have one-o-those tool belts when I was a 10footer and did drywall for a living... Everyone likes the new belt, 'cept the poor guy who has to break it in.

Ahhh, my beloved tool belt...so soft and comfortable. Putting it on is like slipping into my favorite blue jeans. Couldn't imagine breaking in a new one, but oil is the thing to use if you want to give it that "I know what the heck I am doing look".

DAM those tool belts.. you'll need a double hip replacement in pronto time..

took a call a few years back.. i knew who the general forman was.. he was always on me about not havin' tools..

i'd say 'that's what an apprentice is for ,,, for me to bum tools off of... "

well, i walked on the job with a fisher-price plastic tool box .. with little plastic hammer, plastic saw, plastic wrench, an plastic screwdriver..

well, he flipped out an the crew was actually dropped on the floor .. screamin' in laughter..

it's the stuff that becomes 'legendary'..

i still get back-slapped for that..

Don't mess with my hammer...I can only think of three things that feel more comfortable in my hand. ;) It is the only tool that my kids aren't allowed to drag out into the yard and lose

Hafta agree on the speed square

Re: New tool belt

Trick is to carry as little weight as possible! Don't kill yourself with all those tools - can't use them all at the same time anyhow.

I busted the chops of one of the guys wokring on my new house. He was a finisher. Insisted on carrying a tool belt loaded with tools through the house. His square and 28 oz eastwing kept banging the fresh paint on the walls. We had it out bigtime.

He had a choice, quit working for me or only carry the tools he needed for the finish work at hand. After the job he thanked me. Said it was the easiest he has worked. Was amazed at how much of a difference 15 pounds of unnecessary tools, nails, and screws made after a day.

Listen to Crabby - get an apprentice to carry your box!
