Here's the story in a nutshell:

July 15th I bought a new lawn tractor from TSC. It's a Husky with a 20hp Kohler.

In early September I was using it and it started knocking really badly and started to seize. I shut it down and checked the oil- it was dry. I ran and grabbed a quart of oil and put it in to help cool it down and get some lubrication back into it. I started it back up for about 10 seconds just to let the oil circulate then shut it back down and let it cool for an hour.

While it was cooling I started to investigate and found a constant line of oil up and down my lawn from my last 3 passes. I looked the tractor over and only found traces of oil on the frame. Perplexed, I started it up again and ran it for about 5 minutes. No sign of oil leaking. Ran it for another 20 minutes or so to finish the lawn. Ran fine, no sign of an oil leak.

As I was driving it to the shed, it started to knock and seize again. Parked it and checked the oil- still full.

Called TSC to see about getting it repaired under warranty. They asked if I bought the extended warranty- I didn't. They replied thatI was on my own and needed to contact Kohler.

Kohler put me in touch with a local service center, and I dropped it off. About a day later they called me and said that Kohler wouldn't cover the damage because it was an oil issue and I obviously didn't check it before using it. I blew a gasket (pun intended), because I had checked it and it was laying all over my lawn. Plus it only has about 8 running hours on it. It shouldn't have used a quart of oil in 8 hours.

They said they would check with the rep the following week and get back to me. They stated that the oil level was still full and it wasn't leaking since I brought it in.

The following week I got the call that they found the quick-change oil drain wasn't tight and that's how it lost the oil. They were going to cover it and repair the motor. They "rebuilt" the motor and gave it back to me.

I went to use it last week, and after about 20 minutes of use, it started knocking and seizing again. I checked the oil and it was down half a quart. I looked underneath and found the mower deck covered in oil. It was leaking out around the shaft seal---pouring out!

I took it back to the repair place and told them I want Kohler to replace the motor, not just repair it. I'm waiting for a response from the rep, but the shop said I have a snowball's change at getting a new motor.

I spent extra on this machine to get the Kohler because I've owned a lot of them over the years and always had good luck...I can't believe how everyone's quality has gone down since MTD became the main player in the lawn mower industry. It's all garbage- even good names like John Deere, Arins, and Cub Cadet are all that MTD crap now.

Just had to vent on this.

Thats a bunch of BS on Kohlers part. If they rebuilt it you would think the shaft seal would be new and the crank was replaced...or at least inspected.

I wonder how folks who have one bad experience with one product conclude that all similar products are trash. If that were true Kubota would rule the world.

I think Kohler or their repair shop are at fault here and should replace the engine, but I never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express so what do I know?

Re: New Tractor Blues

MTD has become the Wal-Mart of lawn equipment. They control the market and dictate to the motor manufacturers what to do.

Just about every decent brand name from the past is now made by MTD. John Deere, Airens, Cub Cadet, Troy-Built, Bolens, White, Sears Craftsman, and EVERY Store-brand like Husky and others.

A few brands like Toro, Husqvarna, and Kubota are still good machines and not made by MTD.

I knew when I bought the Husky that it was going to last about 3-4 years, but it was an economical solution to a big problem. I was willing to take the bite because cash was tight and the lawn was getting very long.

I worked for 2 years in my teens at a small engine shop. I know my way around a small motor and repair them frequently for other people. I can't believe the crap that comes through nowadays. Example- I had an MTD snowblower come through a few weeks ago for a new belt and a lube job. While lubing it up, I realized that this 2 year-old machine had no axle bushings or bearings. Just a flared hole in the sheet metal with the axle going through it. It was already starting to elongate. I give it another 2 years before it's toast.

I just can't grasp why companies can't sell decent products at decent prices.

That's why I have vintage equipment.
I have a 35 year old Allis Chalmers - built like a tank.
I have actually pulled my Searay with it.
I recently acquired a vintage Super Chief which I hope to restore this winter.
Also, built like a tank.

I don't believe John Deere or Sears Craftsman are made by them but I do get your point.

Brings back memories of my Gravely Convertible. Now there was a tank that could do anything on a smallholding and last for-cotton picking-ever.

John Deere farm equipment is still made by Deere, but yard equipment is now all MTD. Craftsman is MTD, but Sears keeps it quiet so you have to buy replacement parts through them.

Just a side note on all of this: I was recently brought a Craftsman gas leaf blower to fix. The exhaust bolts were stripped out of the aluminum. I took one look at it an handed it back to the guy. Right on the tag it says "service duty 50 hours" I told him to go buy a new one. It's not worth fixing.

Pure junk.

Re: New Tractor Blues

I just mowed the yards for the last time this year, I hope, the hour meter on the JOHN DEERE says 507 hours and it is still going strong with the Kohler engine.
I think the better lawn tractors are made by Deere, but the cheaper lines that are sold thru places like Home Depot are MTD's.

MTD= Modern Tool And Die

Just about every decent brand name from the past is now made by MTD. John Deere, Ariens, Cub Cadet, Troy-Built, Bolens, White, Sears Craftsman, and EVERY Store-brand like Husky and others.

A few brands like Toro, Husqvarna, and Kubota are still good machines and not made by MTD.

WRONG!!!!!!!! John Deere, and Ariens/Gravely are infact made by their own companies. Ariens/Gravely is actually manufactured in Appleton WI.

White, Husky, Cub-Cadet, and as of lately Troy Built are in fact now owned and manufactured by MTD. Funny thing when MTD purchased troy Built, they refused to honor warranties for some products like the Chipper/Shreader line. This was a HUGE mess.

Toro is still Toro

Husqvarna is now manufactured by AYP=American Yard Products, Which is the same company that makes the Craftsman brand, as well as Much of the disposable 2 cycle equipment like Weed Eater, and Homelite.

John Deere is still John Deere.

Kubota is still Kubota.

One thing I want to stress here. And trust me I know, you get what you pay for. Ariens/Gravely used to be top of the line equipment. I read earlier someone commented on their old convertible. There are lots of those still out there being used. Ariens used to be known for ONLY top of the line stuff. Just like Cub Cadet, and John Deere. However, consumers are only interested in the bottom line, cost. To compete with companies like Home Depot, and lowes carrying MTD tractors for $999 they had to come up with a homeowner line of equipment. This is equipment that is well..... cheap. Instead of bearings they used bushings, instead of 7 gauge fabricated decks, they had to use 10 gauge stamped decks. People think they are getting a great Gravely machine, but at haff the cost. When in reality they are getting a machine of equal quality as a MTD, but painted orange and red that says Gravely.

Bottom line there are no shortcuts, if you want quality, that is repairable, not replaceable, your going to pay for it. Your going to spend several thousand on a ZTR riding mower, and several hundred on a weed wacker.

People used to crack me up when they would complain they bought a John Deere rider at home Depot, and it's broke after 2 years. The john Deere, Gravely, Ariens, or Cub Cadet you bought at Home Depot for several hundred dollars less, is not the same machine you could buy at a servicing dealer, that would last you a life time.

ALSO!!!!!!!........... The engine manufactures have done the same thing. That Kohler Courage on the John Deere at home depot is crap. But that Kohler Command on the one at the dealer, with the cast sleeves is a 5000 hour engine. Funny how they make the names so close, Command, and courage. Maybe no one will really pay attention.

Re: New Tractor Blues

One other thing, I'm surprised they covered the warranty at all. The quick drain oil plugs (I'm assuming you have the standard one that is black that twist locks) is actually manufactured by Stens Corp. It is a add on to the engine. They used to be added by the tractor manufacturer at the factory, as a selling point.

Kohler used to be famous for denying these claims because (and rightfully so) it was a after market part that caused the failure.

Most companies switched to a fitting that is more like a out door faucet that requires multiple turns to open that valve. The Twist lock ones used to fail a lot.

Re: New Tractor Blues

Toro Lawn mowers are built about 25 miles from me in Windom MN.

I have a 6 year old Simplicity. When my dad, now gone, bought it it was made better then the cheap Huskeys and other lawn products bought at the chain stores. In fact, my brother bought a Huskee the same year and he junked that out about 2 years ago. I don't know who make Simplicity back then, or now. But, at that time is was built better then the cheaper brands.

It was not built nearly as well as a John Deer or Toro of that time period.

I need to replace my simplicity soon. I look at lawn mowers quite often. I understand that you get what you pay for. But, have a problem spending the same amount of money for a lawn mower that I could go buy a car for and drive 100000 miles.

I'm kinda stuck. Every year I just keep hoping to keep the simplicity going for another year.

It takes me about 4 hours to mow my lawn with a 38 inch deck. I live in the country and have a big lawn.

Re: New Tractor Blues

Couple of points.

Not all consumers are interested only in the price. I am one who is interested in quality and durability, and I think most iboaters are like me.

My Gravely Convertibles were made in Cary, NC with Gravely engines. . .big thumpers (22ci. and only 6HP, peaked at something like 2200rpm). The finest pieces of ag/yard equipment I ever owned.

Re: New Tractor Blues

Three years ago I had a Simplicty lawn tractor die. I needed to replace the 16 yr old with a new one. I looked and priced several top brands as well as looked at the box stores. Then I went to a farm show and a dealer had a display of Husquvarna tractors. I have a Husquvarna chain saw and it's great, so I thought if the quality in their tractors was as good I couldn't go wrong. I don't know who makes Husquvarna but I bought one three years ago from that farm Implement Dealer at the cost of one fifth the price of a like Simplicity. I now have 150 hours on it and I am very well pleased with it.
