need a new set of tires for my trailer. currently i have a pair of ST215/75D14 Carlisle Sure Trail ST, which came originally with the trailer. is this a good brand, or is there something better? i am just looking for the best bang for the dollar.

First question you should ask yourself is "how did the current tires perform" if they have done a good job then you may not need to look any further.
Just make sure the best "Bang" for your buck is not the noise you hear from the trailer while at highway speeds after buying "bargain tires".
Got Carlisle's on my travel trailer and boat trailer. No issues to date with mine although if you do a little searching here you will find some people report troubles with them.
Keep them in good condition and make sure the pressure is correct before towing and you should be OK.
Good Luck.
LOL I have a different view. I would go local and ask the local tire shop to recommend some rubber. I like the ability to have the salesperson within ARMS reach so we can discuss any tire issues. My method has worked quite well over the past 25yrs and the tire place (Tire Warehouse) has not ever steered me wrong.
Going local can be very accommodating when you are not wrapped up with brand names. As mentioned above you MUST do your part too....... tire pressure check (more than once a year) and repack or replace the wheel bearings correctly every year and check them every trip.
Wish I could get ST215/75D 14's locally. Best I could get was Firestone 205's w/ 1750 lb capacity for my 7000 trailer compatability at 50 psi. No one carries the 14" 215's around here. 15", then there are a ton of options, but not for the 14" rims so much.
I'm unaware of any really "superior quality"(like Michelin) trailer tires....just buy what you can find, keep 'em pumped up to recommended pressure, replace them every 3 or 4 years anyway, pray, hope for the best, carry a jack and a spare. My present tires are also Carlisle and about $200 for the pair, mounted and balanced....so far, so good! Blow-outs on the Interstate are not fun!..Good Luck!
I have some Carlisle's now and they haven't been any better or worse than any other brand I've had. They have all seemed to perform and last about the same. I would just avoid the very-bottom-of-the-price-range ones.
Kumho makes a D load range 14" radial trailer tire. If you are close to maxed out for load on your current tires, the D range would give you a nice upgrade and safety factor.
Carlisle has a lot of negative reports written online. Not many people have written positive things about them. Complaints like blow outs and air bubbles in the side walls are only too common. Of course only people who are either very happy or very unhappy with their purchase will actually write a report. http://www.epinions.com/reviews/Carlisle_USA_Trail_Utility_Tire?sb=1
Bob_VT said it best!! Work with a local reputable tire shop. Any tire issues under warranty can be dealt with locally. In my area Tire Kingdom is the place to go for good service.
