Plugger and Dixie420  How hard is it to remove the motor? How much does a 48hp motor weigh? I know that I can't lift it and don't have a hoist at home either. What do I do about all of the wire and steering rods and stuff? Then of course...where do I put it while I am fixing the transom? What about all of the screws and bolts in the transom? Do all of them come out and do I make sure that they all go back in? Some of them seem to have no purpose at all. I am an amature when it comes to boats, much less boat repair. I bought this '72 Newman tri-hull w/'92 48hp evinrude on a '69 trailer, from a friend for $500. So far I have had to rewire the trailer and change out the hitch and chains. Had to replace an old tread falling off tire. I have thrown out all of the rottened seats, flooring, stringers, and flotational/insulating foam below the floor deck(weighed about 300#). I have replace the stringers and laid down the deck flooring. I have not "refoamed" yet. I have resealed the lower unit, not sure it that worked yet, Replace the plugs to the right ones. I have attempted to fine tune the motor but can't. Then I checked the transom and noticed that it was rotten and appears to maybe have termites....(Yipeee)....so I know that I am going to have to replace the transom. So I need to do that before I try to refiberglas the floor.Any and All suggestions are appreciated. :) You can contact me directly at rbmc2@netzero.net

Actually, taking the motor off the boat will be one of your easiest battles. If you are not sure as to where everything goes just take a picture before you start. Here is a picture of a motor that has been taken off a boat. Djohns19 said that it only took about $40.00 to build his engine stand.

You and a buddy should be able to yank that 48 horsepower off. You could either build a stand or fine a pallet and lay the motor in its side on the pallet out of the way. I prefer the stand, thats what I did for my 125 horse Merc, but it won't kill the motor to lay on its side as long as you are careful. Generally, when the floor, stringers, and transom are replaced, you do the transom, then the stringers, and finally the floor. Its easier, but since you already have the floor and stringers done, you may end up having to cut the floor and stringers about a foot away from the transom, cut the old out, glass in the new transom, and glass in the sections of stringers and floor again. The joint between floor, transom, and stringers is vital, it recieves the most stress, so it needs to be very well built and strong. Good luck...

The published weight for the heaviest 48hp omc is 218 lbs. An easy job for two.
