Hi,
I'm new to this forum and it's been about 15 or 20 years since I have owned an outboard or boat of any kind for that matter. Would love to do some fishing with this boat. Lakes and rivers. I live in S.E. PA. I'm sorry if I am asking the wrong questions in the wrong forum. I'll get better. Promise!

I just brought home a used Blue Fin 12' Aluminum runabout. It came with 2 engines.
1. 7.5 hp Chrysler model # 72HOC S/N 1818

2. 4.0 hp Johnson Model # J4RCEC S/N 7938254 Belgium is under the S/N

Can anyone identify the model years of these? I need to get repair manuals and figure out the fuel mix for both.

I have looked over several websites and I think the Chrysler is 1980 and the Johnson is 1989.

I highly doubt the Johnson is 1989 from the looks of it. It has a gas port for external tank but a plastic tank mounted to the back of the middle section and hose to the port. There is no forward or reverse. You release a handle in top of cover and rotate 180 degrees to go in reverse.

I also have a Gamefisher 9.9 I bought 2 months ago in anticipation of buying a boat without an engine. That is the engine I would like to use with this boat and sell the other two after I get them running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks and Happy boating,

Re: New used engines and boat

Hello and welcome to iboats.
Must be great having a choice of motors.
Your Johnson is a 1989 rope start by the looks of it. Posting a photo of it would be nice. Cover on and off.
Can't help with the Chrysler. Never had one, never will.
Gamefisher is a nice motor.
Do they all run ??? any of them will push you along O.K. The 9.9 should plane you out nicely with 2 people aboard. the 7.5 will for sure plane you out alone and may plane out with 2 people depending on total load weight. The 4hp will get you around but most likely be working hard to do it.
If they all run then try all 3 and see which one you like best.

the 4hp is an 89,the smaller engines often only had a forward and rev.is as you describe, the chrysler may be identified better on the forum for chrysler and force.chrysler was later changed to force and was bought in late 80's or early 90's by mercury .the smaller mercs were mostly force engines.as for the gamfisher, that too is likely a force /chrysler.you need to reasearch on the chry/force for more details, though this evin/john/omc site has great people that know alot,so you may be in luck .you might compare the 7.5 and 9.9 to see if they have similiar features,as for what eng to use,I would agree with your intent, you may hear alot of negative things about chry/force,I have owned a few,(given to me)I find their tech .skill to be antiquated, which could be a plus in that it can make fixing easy, but i have found linkages ,throttle arms to be sub par ,seems saltwater really beats em up.finding parts is not as easy, internet likely helps, many shops wont work on them due to necessity to order parts thru special dealers, its easier to work on familiar products, tools ,manuals etc.as for resale, good luck,as I said i was given a few for a reason, down here in S fl.there would be next to 0 market.just the fact,no disrespect.About 10 yrs ago i bought a carolina skiff and put a 9.9 force on it and it was a great boat for my young son, when it came time to sell the rig,I sold the boat and gave the eng with it.I didnt advertise the eng. There is a bad name given to them ,and ,as I said I dont think its totally fair.Just fact .Good Luck Also, gamefisher was sold thru Sears robuck, depending on the yrs.the chrysler and gamefisher parts should be avail thru mercury, impellers etc.you can get thru internet.right here at iboats

Re: New used engines and boat

Hey,
Thanks for the quick feedback. I'll try the other forums like you suggest.

I haven't tried to start either engine yet. I need to dump the old gas and clean the carbs, new plugs, replace waterpump impellers first at least. Gamefisher runs good.

Thanks again,
Happy boating,
Slimbob:)
