Hey folks! New to the site!

I just bought a boat/motor combo. It came with a 1982 70 HP Evinrude.

It was well priced and that's why I bought it even though there is an issue with the motor. The boat is in great shape and trailer it ok too. The seller only had it for a year and he did start t on the driveway. It ran well.. it didn't seem to have issues. But he was honest enough to tell me that it "bogs down" while on the water.. some sort of power loss and it really doesn't recover. He's not sure what the problem is. Well, we removed the cowel and also discovered quite a bit of gas leaking from what appeared to be the carberator.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

BTW, is the 1982 a "good year"?

Thanks kindly in advance!

First Start with a Compression Test. $20 tool you will need one around. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=313963&highlight=compression
Should have been done before purchasing the motor. But i didnt do it before buying my motor im new to boating as well. (you will learn alot fast here on iboats.) Then if your a hands on kinda guy like most of around here get yourself an OEM manual www.outboardbooks.com Your motors model number will tell you the year of the motor. just google your model number easiest way. spark test and fuel line check is in order then if all checks out well give her a run if not report back here with your year hp and someone should help you out, and welcome to iboats. I say google your model number cause guy who sold me my motor said it was an 86 when it turned out to be 82.

So far, it sounds like there is a gas leak at the carb. :D

I would figure out where it is leaking from and fix it. Then try it again.

That gas leak could be a ton of things, many of which mess up the carb settings. I had one where the bowl wasn't tighted down right and it would leak and suck in air. You couldn't adjust it right. Once it was tightened, all was right with the world and it ran great. I used a lot less gas also!

Good luck and keep us posted. The more details your questions (tell us where it leaks from, etc) the better your responses will be.

Gas leak was fixed - was just the fuel line because there was pressure in the gas tank from sitting in the sun

I still have to figure out what the loss of power is. I am picking it up tonight. Just bought it.
