hello guys. i just bought a 2001 four winns 180 with a 4.3 gx volvo penta. when the engine is on nutrual the boat shakes and when i put it on idle it still shakes untill i go above 3000 rpm. does anyone knw if thats ok or whats the problem and how to fix? any answers would be very helpfull. thanks alot.

Please explain, I'm not familiar with that term.

As far as the shaking, that is definitely not normal. What it is, who knows. Could be fuel related (injectors maybe) electrical. (Plug wires, spark plugs, cap, rotor, computer) or mechanical. (valve, piston).
It's just going to take some troubleshooting to find out. Do you have the full model number (including the letters after the 4.3GX, or the Volvo Serial Number of the engine?

Sounds like a low rpm misfire. When was the last time you had a full tune up?

Learn from my costly mistake. I bought an older Wellcraft with a VP drive. The boat had old gas and had not been ran for 2 years. It vibrated badly. However, the more it was ran the less the vibration was. Until I saw waater coming in at the back of the motor. finally called a mechcanic. Bottom line, bearings went out and ruined the drive shaft and the bell housing. The bellhousing was $1100.00 new( we found one used for $400.00) THe shaft is $600.00 new. If I had stopped sooner the cost and down time would have been ALOT less.

thanks for the replies guys. well i just bought the boat from a dealer. there was an old gas in it for about 9 months that i know becausei saw that boat in the dealer. before that i dont know. so what should i do?

Is this out of the water with the drive up? In water with drive down?

Have you checked the u joints?
