New VRO pump - failed after 3 months

Hey folks,

Haven't been here in a while, and that's a good thing since I'm usually here when I have problems.

I did have an issue over the last two weekends with a fuel delivery problem - engine would loose RPM's and die while running (all speeds). I could keep her running by constantly sqeezing the bulb. After checking for leaks, restrictions and bad fuel, I reluctantly tore into the new VRO pump I bought about 3 months ago.

Problem found - a small tear in the air motor diaphram. Now, the question is, do I just buy a new diaphram and be done with it, or do new parts generally come with some sort of warranty?

I'm happy to have found the problem, but these pumps are pricey, and I would sure expect more than 3 months out of one.

Thoughts?

If the pump was purchased from an authorized dealer, it comes with a 1 year parts AND labor warranty.

Re: New VRO pump - failed after 3 months

here's what I did with my 86 Johnson 60hp (an absolute piece of junk from day one). After two VRO failures, I just said chuck-it.

The first time, I had no oil pressure, fortunately died at the dock. The second time was excessive oil usage, twice the normal rate and lots of smoke.

I just emptied the oil reservoir, disconnected the wire to the oil pressure alarm so it would not bother me, and ran premixed 50:1. So the VRO just sits there pumping gas, but no oil.

Thanks for the replies. Also, the bad diaphram was not the air motor, but the one for fuel.

Since I purchaced on line (Mastertech) and installed it myself. And then disasembled it to find the problem, will the warranty still be honored?

I actually used the diaphram from my old pump as a replacement. It is old, but in much better shape than the one in the new pump!

I really don't like the idea of pre-mixing. That's why I decided to spend the bucks on a brand new VRO pump.

Since 1998, you can buy all the needed internal parts for the pumps. They are listed in the accessories parts book.

A fuel diaphragm repair kit is #436095 for around $20.
