im almost done doing the impeller and gaskets and all but when i slide the impeller over the shaft and key then place upper housing over it and turn clockwise, i get to a point wherer the impeller is scraping the gasket. im afraid im going to rip the gasket. it goes: base -> gasket->metal face plate thing-> gasket-> impeller->cover. im sure this is correct per manual. the impeller will rip that gasket for sure. i searched and came up with nada

I've never broken a gasket doing that. I do use Joy dish washing liquid on every impeller I install.

Just soap up the impeller, instll it on the base with the key,, then put the housing down on the studs and turn the shaft.

oh i forgot the blades of the impeller were hiting the pin on the pump base. the pin toward the larger bolt. every time i turn the shaft the blades would clip that pin. will bolting the top down line everything up? im a noob but i got the manual so please stick with me guys.

I bought the locator pins for the water pump impellar housing. I got them from the marine shop where i bought the impellar from one of the mechanics that had a few sets in his box

Re: new water pump kit whoes

my problem really isnt the impeller or the housing pin, they're both new. it just that the impeller(as i rotate shaft) is grazing the pin. i torqued the nuts down anyway. but now i obviously cant tell if the impeller is still hiting the pin, i hope not. im hoping torqing(sp) everything down "aligned" everything. also how difficult should the shaft turn once done, by hand that is. i have to put a bit of force to turn it by hand, and im not a small guy. i does turn freely but its a little snug i guess. thanks again.

Lube up the impeller, put it on the shaft with the key. Then put the housing on. NOW, push down on the housing and turn the shaft CW at the same time. It will take some force to push the housing down, you have to collaps the vanes on have the pump impeller (That's how the pump works)
You shouldn't have to turn the shaft more than half a turn to get the housing all the way down. Just takes some force to do it.

thanks again don. i have it installed, my concern is with the gasket that sits on the metal plate. the impeller rides on that gasket, isnt that goin to tear it to shreads? or does that impeller sit higher up in the housing as not to come in contact with the gasket at all? i want to get this right.
