new "whirring" noise

I recently had my 1998 4.3 liter, mercury alpha outdrive worked on. The engine was a complete rebuild and the impeller and bellows in the outdrive were replaced. During the first 10 hours of running there was nothing unusual, but during the last run there is a whirring noise, like a small motor running (but it's not the bilge pump or live well motors). We can hear it most clearly when standing on a dock behind the stern. I don't know if this is relevant, but the bilge pump malfunctioned on the trip before this and the engine compartment got enough water in it that I could see it churning at the rear of the engine for about five minutes until I got it back to the ramp. All gauges read normal.
Thanks.

Starter gear might not be disengaging, and riding along on the flywheel. Water might have rusted up the mechanism.

I pulled the starter as Steve suggested and everything looks fine. When the stater gear on the bendix drive is retracted into the starter I have 5/8ths of an inch of bare shaft between the starter gear and the retaining ring. Is that about the right amount of clearance on a 4.3 Lt starter motor?

Flashback,
No noise when the engine is off, but the noise is there when it is in neutral.

Don, try to find a change in the noise, that will help narrow it down to a certain component, Try all different situations, does it change when you turn the boat? do RPM's make the sound change? Does it make more noise in forward gear, reverse, neutral, ???? Try to isolate the problem..and get back with us, there are a lot of good folks here that can help ........ good luck .........

Maybe it was the starter. I cleaned a little rust out of it and checked the brushes, put it back together and the whirring noise went away.
The End (I hope)
