winter is upon us here in Alberta, which means lots of time to restore an oldie. In alberta its hard to find a good old johnson thats reasonably priced, there are adds on kijiji ive seen that are rediculouse, like a 1962 evinrude 5hp and he was asking $1000.00,and then every other person with an old outboard figured that was the going rate, long story short, people are crazy.
So I posted a want ad on kijiji, for early fifties johnsons, and got a few replies, but nothing i was really interested in.Then a guy emailed me, and said he had the exact motor from the pic in my ad which was a 1954johnson cd11 5.5HP.It was in good condition and agreed to let me come over and do a comp test and whatever else i wanted to do, couldnt see it run as the temperature has been well below freezing for weeks so he couldnt fill a test tank, and he knew enough to never run without water. A cold comp test revealed 85 psi each cylinder, and had great spark, shifted into forward/neautral/reverse nicely, lower unit oil was a bit dirty but no water intrusion, overal it was a well kept motor, then i found out he wanted $500.After i picked my jaw up off the ground i explained that i was going to restore and use the motor which made him happy to know,as the motor was his dads that he owned since new,so he said mke me an offer, i said $200, and he said sure, why not,at least its going to be cared for,(wish i said $150) but considering its condition its not a bad price for a vintage motor in alberta, they dont come up to often, and when they do,there way too much,he also showed me pics from the late fifties of him and his dads boat with the CD11 on the back and hes going to send me some copies, as well as the original bill of sale from 1954 if he can find it,thinks he knows where it is, that would be pretty cool.
Anyways here are some pics of my new project, i have since put it on a stand,i will be asking lots of questions as i go along, as this is only my second motor project, and definetly not my last, i was also wondering if anyone can tell if that pressure tank looks right correct to that motor,he said it came with the motor originally.
Thanks STICKLER.

Yea, people are crazy. I own three of those green Johnson CD's and didn't pay over $100 for either one of them. And all run. Jeez, I must be doing something wrong, when it comes to trying to sell my running motors for $250. LOL Anyhow, those are cool little motors and are great for puttin around the lake in your 12' tinny. Keep the mix at 16:1 and it'll last for years. I actually own 5 old 5.5's and 2 of the old 7.5's. Hmmmmmm, just can't get enough of them.

I think I spy the gas tank in the second photo - nice! $200 for that motor with no tank would have been high. With the tank - much better!

Nice motor!

You don't show a pic of the tank, but it should be a 2-line tank with the fitting on the end to connect to the motor. $200 for a RUNNING motor with tank would be an average deal in my neck of the woods.

It's amazing how many of those old CD's are still out there running. They built a nice motor, when they built that one. I still see them pop up on Craigslist ever now and then.

Here are some pics of the pressure tank,it has a small aluminum primer button , fuel level indicator, inside the tank is pretty gummed up but no rust at all, it looks to me that it would be correct to this motor ,but im not 100% sure.IMG_0532.jpgIMG_0534.jpgIMG_0536.jpgIMG_0538.jpg

That tank is correct, the newer tanks had the black plastic button.

Thanks for the link kfa4303, that will be helpful,i also have a manual to aid me as well.I was also wondering if there is a part number for a new float for the carb, i buy my kits from sierra at my local NAPA, but they dont have a listing that early, wondering how long they used that float before they changed it, or if anyone knows a good kit that includes a float.

Try your local BRP/OMC dealer, part# 0439071, factory rebuild kit that comes with a float.

Another option is to simply recoat your original float if it is reusable.

Model airplane dope is the best bet.

That's a decent looking tank. Looks like you did alright on your purchase. I bet you won't have to do much to get that motor running. That's a nice looking motor and looks like it's been treated good. I would try it, before you tear into the carb. I've gotten many of my motors running good, without messing with the carb. If you do get a new float, a better choice would be the 396514 plastic float. No muss, no fuss and it'll work a lot nicer than the cork floats. The ignition system may need checking though. Unless the coils have been replaced, the originals are almost guaranteed to be shot. You'll be able to tell, by removing the recoil assembly and inspection plate, on top of the flywheel. There is a hole in the flywheel that will allow you to get a visual of your coils.

I like NAPA and apparently O'Reilly automotive stores sells Sierra parts too. The old cork floats are kind of hit or miss. Sometimes they can be redoped and used again. Other times they literally crumble in your hands. I like to replace them with the new plastic versions whenever possible. It's just one less thing to go wrong. Unfortunately, the carb kits don't come with a new float, so you'll have to buy it separately. They're about $10. Here's a link to a parts catalog for a 1955 model that may be of some help.

Thanks for the part catalog , do you know if sierra makes a float for these motors, they dont list one for that year but i know they used that float forever, the reason i like Napa is that i get my parts in like 2 days, and i get 25% off all parts through my company account which signifigantly lowers my cost to rebuild my motor, but if not, i have no problem with $13 for a OMC float.

That is am OMC part number. Take that to your local OMC dealer and tell them you want one of those, if you buy a carb kit.
