New Yamaha 150 Stalls when shifting

I have a new Yamaha 150 EFI 4 Stroke (2006 engine but just launched for the first time in April this year along with my '06 leftover 2101 DC). The engine was just in for a 20 hour service. While bringing the boat in to the dock I noticed that it stalled for the first time when I shifted very, very, very slowly from neutral to forward. The engine started right back up but I asked the dealer to check it out (they are a Yamaha dealer and have Yamaha's highest rating for service). The service manager told me that it's not that unusual since the motor is designed to lower the idle when shifting to prevent causing transmission problems when shifting from forward to reverse or vice versa. They supposedly checked it out and said nothing was wrong.

After picking the boat up from the 20 hour service, I had the same problem when shifting very, very, very slowly from idle to reverse.

The service manager told me that I needed to give it a bit more gas when shifting (which doesn't seem right). I would think that I should be able to shift into gear and give it gas as slowly as I'd like (which is not how it's operating).

The engine runs perfectly other than that.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I do trust the dealer but don't like his answer.

Thanks,

Ken Goldman

While you may not like his answer, consider the fact that it may be true!! Also, when shifting the boat into gear, you aren't supposed to baby them into gear. They should be flicked into gear with a firm, quick shift. The shift dogs are sacrificial and the slower that you drag them into gear, the sooner that they will wear out . I think your stalling may be due to your technique. Is this your first boat ???

Mine has done the same thing for the same reason Bowhuntrrl said.
Number one, when you start the motor you'll notice that the rpm goes up to around 11 to 1200 rpm and immediately starts coming back down to the 6 to 700 rpm idol speed. You need to allow it the time to stabilize to idol speed before shifting.
After idol is stabilized give it a firm and deliberate "pop" into gear. Don't worry, you have to push it pretty far to bring the rpm up once in gear . If you ease it into gear you'll notice that the gears will grind. It won't do that if you shove it in gear.
With some practice you'll get it. As we say down here; Gas it, you aint gonna hurt it.

Bowhuntrrl is right. Do not shift sloooooow unless you like toothless gears! And yes you need to warm up.

why shift so slow? all your doing is tearing things up.
when shifting into or out of any gear shift firmly and quickly.
its better than slow and easy and its the way the system was designed.
the F150 has a switch to tell the ECU its in or out of gear as well as a shift cut switch that misfires the engine when going from any in gear position to nuetral position, hold the linkage with the cutout switch engaged and it may stall if everything else is ok.
without the cutout switch its almost impossible to shift, thats why its there, to unload the propshaft and allow the sliding clutch to disengage the gear.
rev the engine in nuetral much and it sets a code for shift position switch, doesnt affect anything it just tells me who is operating it correctly and who is not, allowing me to attempt to better educate the consumer.

Along with proper shift cable setup on the engine, it is important as well to make sure the TPS voltage is set to spec. Both items can be the cause of the F150 engine to die when coming out of gear.

Jeez Rod........didn't you catch the 08 tech service class this year? :D:D jk lol.

actually the day of the tech seminar I was in Kennesaw GA at the F350 school, but as I check the TPS voltage at the PDI,there was a PDI wasnt there?, I have to asume it was done.
but if you move the lever slow enough the shift cut out switch will hang in the closed position and can cause the engine to stall coming out of gear, its the only time the switch is activated.
it should not activate when shifting into gear. however if you continue the slow shift into gear you will get to post about metal in the gear oil and damaged shift clutch and associated gears.
not all dealerships/techs actually follow the PDI sheet at engine delivery nor do all actually check the setup out of the box.

Not to derail the thread Rod, but have you installed and or ran a F350 yet? Any thoughts if you have?

PDI.........whats that? :D:D

I hear you on the PDI. The majority of the issues customers have are releated to just hanging and sending them out the door. Yamaha's are awesome reliable engines for the most part, but the stuff still needs to be verified.
