Fixing to upgrade to one of these two engines. From research the Merc will be less expensive by about $500 and easier to get parts & service for. The Yamaha will be about 40lbs. lighter than the Merc. Yamaha displacement is about 15 cubic inches less than Merc.

Both are 3 cylinder engines. The Merc's reputedly a reliable but rough idling engine. What is the Yamaha's reputation? Is it also a rough idler? Any difference in performance between the two? Anyone owned them both? Any horror stories about either engine?

Thanks.
Bob

Re: New Yamaha 90 vs. New Merc 90 - 2 stroke

With the displacement 17% smaller than the Merc, both engines rated for the same rpm, and both burning 87 octane; how does the Yamaha manage to put out the same power?

What is lost in the way of performance by going with the smaller displacement engine? On a car or truck engine it would be torque and low end performance. What about OB's?
Bob
