What's up, everybody??

I've just acquired my first boat. :D

My father-in-law has several, but despite that, I don't know jack about boats in general.
He told me last night he was going to give me one of his boats...it's a 1980-something Charger 747XLT.
I understand this to be a bass boat, but, while I don't fish, it appears to me (and, from what I'm told) that this will make a decent ski/get-around boat for a first-timer...especially with the right engine/prop setup.

True so far??

Anyways, everything on the boat is original, so needless to say, it could use some work. Not a full on restoration, but some updating.

As far as the engine, he's giving me one that he had on a pontoon. I don't know ANYTHING about it yet...I have to talk to him more in-depth Thursday night...if weather permits, we'll be putting the engine on Sunday, and I'll begin cleanup.

Anyway, my two main issues are the paint and the windshield.
Windshield first, since it is a little simpler : The boat is pretty streamlined, over-all, but when you get to the windshield, it's like a mack truck. No aerodynamics whatsoever. What are the necessary steps in doing something about that?? I'd like to give the boat that ski-boat look, as well as aiding it to pierce through the air a little better. As far as I can tell, it's just held on with screws. IS there more to it, like an epoxy or something?? If so, what's a good way to remove it without hurting the fiberglass??
Are there kits to replace older boats with more aerodynamic windshields?? If not, am I looking at just building one?? If so, how??

I know...my cup runneth over with questions. :p

As far as the "paint", it's in pretty good condition. But it's not the prettiest. If this is something I need to hold off on, I'm ok with it...I'm not that vain. But I'd like to start gathering ideas and information so that, when the time comes, I'm well-equipped.
So, for a fiberglass boat, what are some methods, tips, and tricks as far as "paint"?? You'll notice I've encompassed "paint" in quotations...that is due to the fact that I'm not even sure it IS paint. I've heard Gelcoat, too, which is apparently NOT paint. (you see how lost I am yet??). I need something for top-side as well as underneath.
Is this something that I can do myself?? Lake weather is coming up fast, but, this being my sole project, I can dedicate a decent amount of weekend/weeknight time to it.

As far as the upholstery/carpet, it's not TOO bad, considering the age. The floor could use new covering, but the seats are actually immaculate (no rips..not even bad cracking). They're a blue that I can live with.

Well, that's all the questioning I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll have plenty more. Please don't think that I lazily just tossed this thread out because I didn't want to search the forum...I have searched SOME, but I'm actually bound by not knowing what all to search FOR. Plus, it'd be a big help to get the main questions I have answered in a centralized location.

Thanks, in advance, for any and all help!

Re: Newb to the forum AND boats.

hi, welcome to i boats :)

first of all ....when you get the boat ...we need pics.....

the windsheild is just made of plexi or lexan and you can have one made for little cost...instlation is not hard.

the "paint" could be anything from gellcoat to metalflake so we really need to see it.

3 ......uh sorry to tell you...bass boats dont make very good ski boats...but it depends on the boat....

the toon motor could be anything from a 35 to 100 hp so it is too early to tell

Pics are on the way, but probably next week. I just went and saw the boat last night, but didn't have the digicam. Like I said, weather permitting, I'm going out to put the motor on and start clean-up Sunday, so I'll have to get pics then.
Yah...I figured as much. But, after looking at the shape of the underside, it seems like it would carry through the water pretty decent. Someone was telling me that, at 950lbs, with a 90hp motor and only two or three people in it, the Charger could see upper 40's to 50mph. Sound realistic?? That'd be enough to ski, right, even if not spiritedly??
I use to ski when I was younger, but it never really captivated me. I always liked the driving, though.

Mainly, this will just be a get-around boat...something to cruise on Beaver lake, or get us out to the popular coves and bluffs. But my wife skis, my brother-in-law skis, and if I can convince my dad to get back up...man, that'd be awesome. He used to be awesome, but it's been probably 15-20 yrs since he had his boat and got behind it. So, it'd be awesome if I could pull someone.

That'll work. Prop size is another question I'll have in the future (moreso, once I know what engine and prop I'm getting from the old man...in law...), but I'll wait until it's necessary.

Kind of. This'll be my first boat, but since I got together with my now-wife in '02, I've spent just about every other weekend, from June-September, at Beaver Lake. Her grandma and her parents all lived in a cove, and her aunt has a cabin right there. Like I said, her dad practically has a boat graveyard going and both her grandma and her aunt each have pontoons.
This is the first year we decided to get a boat. A friend of mine has a 2001 Glastron that we WERE gonna buy, but this suits us a little better right now, getting the hand-me-down.

Update

Update

Well, I got a pleasant surprise yesterday.
I'm not getting the Charger. I'm actually getting a Regency Starfire 180. It appears newer and, fortunately, doesn't need the collective updating that the Charger did.
We got it moved to his hangar yesterday, but did not get a chance to begin the engine swap, so I still don't even know what I'm getting where that's concerned, but I'm getting it sorted out this weekend, come hell or high water.
Of course, as is par for me, I also forgot the digi cam, so no pics as of yet. But, once again, I'm getting that for next week.

In the mean time, any info or opinions on this boat are appreciated.

Thanks.

Not for long! Round of 18 at a public course - around $40; 10 gal premix + 5 gal gas for trip there and back - $56.25.

But, who wants to be out at the links when the lake's available?
