Thought you guys might be interested to see yet another Super Sport restoration thread.

I bought this boat already 90% stripped down. Still had some rotten floor left at the stern and leftover styrofoam. So far we've stripped out the remaining floor and the stringers (Figured it would be easier to clean and seal the hull with them out of the way). Removed all the deck hardware, and any superfluous rivets. Next we're going to scrub the interior clean, and seal all the rivets and seams with Gluvit (does anyone know where I can buy Gluvit in Canada?)

This boat is getting a full restoration including floor, transom, paint, etc..

The only thing missing from the boat when I bought it are the consoles, so I'll be building a new one from scratch and I haven't decided yet whether we're doing a single starboard side console, or a centre console. Once I get the floor in I'll do some mockups to see what works best.

Anyway, here she is: I'll be sure to post progress pics as we move along.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... This is an industrial product alot like gluvit, 'n ya might find it on yer side of the border, try roofin' supply houses,....
I like it Better in fact,... No mixin',... comes thicker in a tube too,...

Keep in mind, the old consoles actually provided some strength to the hull structure,...
Yer new lay-out will have to do the same,...

Hmmm, I didn't consider that. I've seen lots of resto threads on the SS160 and I always thought the consoles looked rather flimsy to be honest. I'd like to hear others opinions on the matter. If I have to revert to the original 2 console layout, then it's not a big deal except I'll have to build them both from scratch, as they were not included when I bought the boat.

SC center consoles had vertical ribs similar to tbe one at the forward end of both of your rear shelf compartments to replace the rigid structure of the console.

Although it may have appeared flimsy, the consoles and front U shaped bench did add to tbe structure of the hull.

Look around, lots of SC rebuilds that have been done in the past and that are currently being redone, reworked or restored. There are some here in tje resto forum, and more in the SC forum:

dozerII can help w the Canadian supply chain. Make sure to get details on the SafeStrip if you plan to remove any (all?) paint

Good luck w your project.

I haven't tried the stuff that Bondo linked to, but another product is called Coat-It - Similar to Gluvit. Available across the border - No idea.

Welcome aboard! Do take a look at the Starcraft section JB linked to. Plenty of ideas there.

:welcome:Zeegler50 I agree with the above the consuls ad a lot of strength to the gunwales. with the upholstered panel on the front of them they at tremendous torsional structure. Depending on where you are in Canada I can help you out with suppliers for Gluvit and upholstery supplies.

Welcome Zeegler50! :welcome:

The SuperSport is a very versatile design however does require most (if not all) components for good structural integrity. Consoles, deck/stringers, bow-header, splashwell, front deck & the side-panels all play a major role in keeping the SS whole. If any are removed/modified, some form of design compensation is often needed.

The side-panels & how they tie into the floor protect the outer-chine, rib-end holes & spray-rail from stress cracks...something that many of us have encountered to various degrees.

Also check out the splashwell & kneebrace for stress cracks...cause by running the boat with a bad transom.

I hope we didn't scare you away

Nope not scared yet. :D

The splash well does indeed have a crack at one of the bends. I know a guy with a TIG welder who's going to take care of that for me. Everything else seems to be good and solid. I'll get a better look when we strip it for new paint.

I like the idea of a centre console, but at this point I'm thinking that maybe just going with a single side console would be simpler. I can add some vertical braces, especially on the port side, to help stiffen the structure. Also, instead of the horseshoe shaped seats at the front, I plan on doing a full width platform. I assume that will help strengthen the boat somewhat too.

I'm fairly new to boating, and not familiar with the following terms: "outer-chine, rib-end holes & spray-rail"???

The spray-rail is the "V" protrusions on the hull sides. They're known to crack if they're not properly supported.

The outer-chine is the edge of the bottom hull skin that bends-upwards to the double-seam.

The outer-most rivet holes for the ribs are where the bottom hull-skin can flex (if allowed) leading to fatigue cracks.

You can see how my hull flexed-downward resulting in pretty significant cracking.

The good news is that it seems as though very few of us in the Starmada have experienced these issues; my SS, Waterman's chieftain, Grandad'sHoliday and Magnumdeke's 1st Islander.

Wow, that's kinda scary there! Did you get it welded?

By the way, thanks for educating me on the terminology. I'm learning a lot.

You're welcome!

No welding; External patches buttered with 5200 and riveted into place.

You really need to take the time to check out classic cat's (blue fin's), rebuild. Check his signature link above. Best information on corrosion repair.

Thanks I'm checking it out now. I've been looking at a bunch of other people's resto threads, and the wealth of information is unbelievable. Without this forum, and you guys posting these threads, I'd be lost at sea. Pun intended. :)
