newbe engine problems 73 50 horse evinrude electric start

HI everyone new looking for help if possible,I PURCHASED AN OLD PETERBORUOGH DART WITH A 1973 50 HORSE EVINRUDE THAT HAD NOT RUN FOR 5 YEARS AND WAS SITTING IN STORAGE,WHEN I PUT IT IN THE WATER AFTER ADDING A FUEL TANK AND A FRESH BATTERY IT STARTED UP WITH OUT MUCH OF A HITCH BUT WHEN MY BATTERY DIED BECAUSE I WAS RUNNING MY TROLLIN MOTOR ON THE SAME BATTERY IT WOULD NOT START AFTER I TRIED THE NEXT TIME I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND I THAUGHT THE BOAT MOTOR WAS SUPPOSED TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY WHEN IT WAS RUNNING I,M NEW TO ELECTRIC START MOTORS AND ALL SO I,M NOT SURE AND I THAUGHT THAT MOTORS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST A 15 AMP FUSE I DIDNT SEE ANY ON THIS OLD BOAT MAYBE I BLEW SOMETHING BECAUSE I DONT THINK MY MOTOR IS GETTING A SPARK IT WONT TURN OVER IF ANYONE COULD HELP OUT OF GIVE ME SOME POINTERS MUCH THANK-YOU.IT DID RUN FINE FOR AWHILE THO LIKE NOTHIN WAS WRONG JUST AFTER I RAN THE BATTERY DOWN

Motors don't turn over if they: 1) have a dead battery, 2) bad, corroded, or loose battery cable connections 3) a bad starter, 4) a bad solenoid, 5) a bad ignition switch, 6) bad wiring between the control box and engine to name just a few things. <br />Never run your trolling motor from your starting battery (unless you like to pull start your engine). Your engine has a very small capacity charging system and it is not capable of charging a dead battery on a 10 or 20 minute run back to the dock. You would have to run wide open for hours to recharge the battery. It does however maintain the starting battery provided you run your accessories off a separate deep cycle battery. The deep cycle must be recharged using a portable charger or single bank on-board chargers are available that you plug into at the dock. When you get the engine running, using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the starting battery with the engine running at 1500 2000 rpm (pretty fast idle if you don't have a tach). Voltage should be 13.5 or so if the system is charging. If its 12.6 or less, its not charging.
