hey everyone, im in the process of restoring a 1978 boats deck /stringers and im wondering if the type of fiberglass on the hull makes a diference structurally? i know i read somewhere in here that theres a certain type of glass on a boat to stay away from..not sure if thats true or if i have that type of glass on my boat... is this true? if it is that type of hull should i get rid of it or beef it up with more glass ?

Spend some time reading this restoration section. There are different cloths, mat, resins, epoxy....... it is real simple but reading it will give you a better understanding.

Your boat has lasted for 30 years and the only issue you're reporting is rotten wood, so whatever type of glass they made it from appears to be holding up. Just start reading like B-VT said and most of your quetions will be answered, plus dozens you didn't know you had.

As for the type of glass. What you can see on the surface is chop, no different that CSM (chop stand mat) only its shot from a spray gun.

The amount applied and how well the job was done, depends on how much beer the crew drank the night before, or maybe even that day at work.
Under the chop and out of sight there will most likely be some roving, but unless you cut out a section and look at it, there's no way to know how many layers of each product were used.
