Re: newbeeee

Trim is what You use to adjust plane angle on the boat for best ride and performance.
tilt is what you use to bring the drive unit fuluu up for trailering

Re: newbeeee

so..
does it use the same motor to adjust the plane? is there a lock on both? and if so where? can you adjust the trim while running you boat? I have a 85 omc with 3.8liter outdrive.

Yup, same motor does both. I don't believe your drive has a limit switch though. Most all the newer manufacturers do now.

Re: newbeeee

Is your '85 a Stringer drive? If so, it may or may not have had the trim option. The stringer used one motor for tilt and a seperate optional system for trim. The trim system would have raised and lowered (pivoted) the whole engine/intermediate/outdrive, from the front of the engine, as a single unit.

If yours is a Stringer and you do not have the optional trim system, DO NOT use your tilt function for trimming. NO, NO, NO!

I'm sorry, I thought that OMC switched over to the Cobra unit in '85.

Great thanks for all the info.
I have another question.... what purpose does the two tilt solenoids have? Can I by pass them from the switch straight to the motor?

Nope,... The Switches will Never be able to handle the amperage that the motor draws...
That's the job of the solenoids...

You never did bother to answer whether you had a stringer drive or a cobra drive. How are we supposed to give you decent information?

Re: newbeeee

Can you post a pic?

Do you have a huge black rubber boot sealing off the transome about 1' x 1' from which the outdrive protrudes?

The stringer and cobra drives are very different. Here is a pic of what they look like.
Here is a stringer:

The stringer has a boot at the transom where it meets the drive, cobra does not.

Here is a Cobra:
